OT Not very lucky with computers

Less than a month ago our computer crashed. We just got a new one. Last night there was an electrical storm and fried our new computer and modem even though they were plugged into a surge protector. We were able to get a new modem today and hooked it up to a old laptop we had. We had a warranty on our computer but lightening is considered to be an act of God, so we will have to pay to either get it repaired or buy a new one. Hopefully this laptop will work until we replace the computer. If you don't see me posting, you know why.

The tree in our backyard was hit by lightening and the bark was blown right off of it on one side. We were lucky the tree didn't fall...it is over 50 feet tall. I'm glad for that. turn

Good night nurse, Robin!! What a crazy thing....I'm so glad you weren't hurt, but that is really too bad about your new computer. Don't you hate the way warranties don't cover the one thing you actually need them for - - ? How maddening.

It's so hard to be without a computer in this day and age...I hope the laptop keeps working in the meantime.

Here's to no more storms for awhile! :)

My computer keeps crashing too. I have had it looked at three times and it still continues. I am beginning to think it is the heat. I am thinking about a new one too. But I don't know what is causing it for sure. Viruses maybe. I had over 90 the first time they cleaned it up. I hope your laptop lasts, I have one too. But I hate it, it is so slow.

I hope that things work out for you. I don't know what we would do if you couldn't post. But at least we know what is wrong if you don't.

Goodness! Let me make a suggestion. Call your electric company and see if they offer a Zap Cap. My electric company does. They set it up on your meter and if you have a lightening strike it helps prevent it from entering your home. You get special surge bars and outlet protectors to plug things into. If lightening strikes and fries anything electrical, they pay for repairs or replacement! It costs me around $8.00 a month and is added to my electric bill. Try googling Zap Cap. I think there is a site that explains this to you. Not all areas offer this.

I have my computer equipment, TV's, stove, oven, refrigeration and uprightfreezer, irrigation system, microwave, and other things protected.

Several years ago lightening struck the street light in front of my home. The lightening traveled down and affected about six neighbors. They lost computers, TV's, garbage disposals, etc. Me? Nothing happened and the street light was right by my house! The Zap Cap paid for itself right there...just for the aggravation I could have had.

I hope you get all of this straightened out. I'm so sorry this happened to you.

Oh my! I don't know that our household would make it without our computers. We have 4, which I think is overkill. We have some really heavy duty surge protectors because my husband works on computers so he's very tech savvie.

We have a backup through the electric company, too. It's pretty cheap. So far we haven't tested ours.

I'm glad the tree didn't collapse. Computers are replaceable, people are not. Not to mention the trouble of repairing your home!

I have two wireless tablets & wireless laptop. In the house is a desktop and another laptop.
We have to make sure we are fully protected from lightening and viruses.

Did you already checked w/ your electric co.? You may already be covered.. Worth a phone call !!.

Many years ago electricity ran in & my phone + answering machine kinda came apart & the insides melted. We were fortunate that not a single other appliance was affected.

Many years ago my cousin was struck by lightning from a storm that was way way off.. he was killed. Something similar happened to someone on a beach in MD a couple of weeks ago though I do not recall if the man was killed or 'just' injured.

Everyone please always be careful EVEN if you think the storm is too far away to be of concern.

Sherrine there is not a Zap Cap in our area. I think it is a great idea though...wish it was offered here.

Diane I'm so sorry about your cousin, lightning is so very dangerous. Nearly35 years ago I was washing dishes and lightning hit a metal porch railing just outside the window over the sink. A flame of fire went quickly up my arm without buning it. it singed all the hair off my arm...I think it is called St. Elmo's fire. I was really lucky. Lightning scares me.

We will be getting a new computer soon, I hope.

If you'd like I can ask my hubby for the best surge protectors. I think some are supposed to be garaubteed against damage from lightning and such.

The best thing about living in Anchorage Alaska is we don't have lightening. My husband can't wait for vacation in Florida to see some lightening. Earthquakes are another story. Lol
