Can Fibro affect you sense of taste?

Hello everyone, I am back again with another question about another symptom my wife has developed.
So, can Fibro affect your sense of taste? She has noticed that everything taste blah to her. This has been going on for a few months. Maggie takes 1 Savella at night, she also takes Melatonin, Metformin and a blood pressure med. Nothing has really changed in her meds, but she is having a horrible problem with being hungry, she takes a few bites, then she gets nauseous and the food just doesn't taste right. She has lost weight due to this, but I am worried about her. This is causing her to be depressed even more than normal. Any ideas, thoughts?

Talk to the doctor.

That is a response I have had to Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's disease flares. This makes the fibro feel much worse, but digestive issues are not really linked to fibro.

The metformin can make things taste funny. I don't have that problem, but I read it can put a metallic taste in your mouth.

Or maybe it could be another medication. When did this start happening and is she taking anything new?

I reread your post and I see that there isn't a change in medication.  I hope that she finds out what is going on.

Interesting question. I have lost weight since Fibro, too, though it's been over a period of 20 years or more. My system just doesn't seem to want much food (I feel full very quickly.)

Never really thought about it actually being due to a change in the way I taste things....but my hubby will often say, "You're not a big fan of food," which infuriates me because I don't think it's true. But maybe it is - ? I do know that I have to make myself eat more than I want, for fear of losing more weight. And I definitely never have any trouble stopping eating, like I did when I was young. So maybe it is partly because it just doesn't taste as good as it used to. I've been concentrating for so long on trying to eat what will make me feel good, or not feel as bad, anyway...

A lot of the time I am very sensitive to taste so I am extremely fussy about what I eat. But then there are times when i have no sense of taste at all. It goes from one extreme to the other, each phase generally lasting a few months. When something tastes bad, I actually feel more pain. I also find it hard to eat crunchy and tough foods because I am so sensitive to touch that it hurts. I practically live on smoothies and well-cooked foods. I feel full very quickly too - and whatever I eat makes me feel nauseous to some extent, despite sticking carefully to my diet. I am always forcing myself to eat a lot more than I'm hungry for, because I am very aware that I'm already underweight.

I read on the IBS forum that rice protein powder can help you put on weight. I'm planning to buy some and start adding it to my smoothies. Maybe it could help your wife?

By the way, I always add cocoa powder, cinnamon, honey and vanilla essence to my health smoothies - it makes them more palatable.

I hope the doctor figures it out soon for your wife.

I'd check into it possibly being caused by the Savella. I've done a lot of research on it because my doctor wanted me to try it but for me the benefits did not outweigh the risks. One of the common complaints that people had was an inability to stomach food and weight loss. Hope this helps and good luck.

The nausea is what would worry me, rather than the change in taste.

Have her talk to her doctor about what is going on.  I think that's important.  I've never had these problems and if I did I would be telling my doctor about it. 

 

These problems also could be caused by medications she is taking.  You can check medications out at Drugs.com.  That's a good site.  Even though she has taken the meds for a while, she still could develop side effects.
