How does one go about getting diagnosed ? ? ?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently seeing a pm doctor for back issues. I currently hurt so bad. ALL of my joints/muscles hurt so bad I can't even get up and move some days. I've seen my primary care dr. and he said "oh, it's just the weather"! How do I go about getting diagnosed / treated for Fibro?? Please help, I know I have this terrible disease! Please help!

Hi, Chelle!  Well, I would suggest you see a good board certified Rheumatologist.  Check first to make sure they treat fibro patients since there still are a few doctors out there in the Dark Ages.  There are two sites where patients review doctors that are pretty accurate.  Healthgrades.com and Vitals.com.  You can check out doctors you are considering.

 

A good rheumy will take a lot of blood work to rule out other illness that share many of the same symptoms as fibro.  This is important because the other illnesses are treated differently than fibro.  They want to rule out Lyme disease, lupus, MS, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.  Once your blood work comes back normal, then a diagnosis of fibro is given.

Whew! It took me forever to get a diagnosis. I was diagnosed last year, but in denial about it. I went to a rheumy and she was horrible. Her office was empty and she went off on another paitient in front of me. I finally went back to an old neurologist I had seen in the past. He diagnosed me with fibro before getting all of my records showing first diagnosis. At my second visit, he again stated I had fibro.

After years of probable MS or Lupus ( positive ANA), this was confusing. I did not know much about disease, but after reading about it I had a real AHA moment.

For over six years, I had been chasing my tail and finally know I am not nuts, I just have fibromyalgia. :)

It can take time to get an answer. Like the previous poster said, it's a process. For some longer than others.

I hope you are able to finally determine the cause of your ailments. I know how tough it can be to be undiagnosed and in pain.
