Hi does anyone else suffer chronic constipation not related to meds

Hi, Nanny. Welcome! Check out "Fibro 101," our first thread, for lots of info on many Fibro issues.

Yes, I did have chronic constipation for many years. Whadda pain! Now, I'm sure my meds play into the whole problem. Through diet and Miralax and Citrucel, I'm much better that way. ( In fact, I didn't realize just how constipated I'd been until I largely got it under control.)

Do you have Fibromyalgia?

I have Crohn's/UC, and sometimes this happens for me. It usually is when I 'hold' it when I am working.

Holding it in, is a NO NO!! Sorry, that is something my doc DRILLED into my head...lol

But yes, in fact, I had to have a total colectomy because of it. my large intestine was considered a toxic mega colon. So the WHOLE large intestine was taken, and 1/2 of the small one. He had to build me a new colon from the remaining small intestine. and I do have to take laxatives everyday. Miralax didn't work for me..at one point I was on 13 doses DAILY, with 8 doses of another medicine, yes, DAILY, and then I had to alternate between enimas and colon preps ( like you have to do for a colonoscopy)... all with NO luck. I had NO bowel movements for 2 FULL months!!!
So, as a result, I won't go more than 2 days without taking my laxatives... I will bloat up and my gut gets rock hard... not pretty.

Yes! I have been using Calm magnesium only staring out with 1/4 teaspoon instead of the larger doses because my doc said it can cause lower blood pressure and mine runs low anyway. It has really helped me alot after years of suffering from chronic constipation. I hope you find relief :)

Thank you for replying . My colonoscopy was clear as was ultrasound but as soon as I resumed eating I have blocked up again . No bowel movement despite sennokot max and cannot pass gas . In distress . Seeing gastroenterologist again Wednesday . Cannot understand why rectum clear but have eaten . And the indigestion is bad and periodic pain in upper back feels like my back is crunching and may break . Sounds stupid but is how it is

You might have gastroparethis. My mother has attacks of it.
I hope the doctor can help you.

Thank you for replying . What are full symptoms of gastroparethis?
Does it stop you from being able to let gas out . I can burp it out but not the other way . Emergency doc last night said my bowel was working very fast but still no flatus or movement came out .

There is a Dr. Christopher herb that has a good chance of working for you. It is called "Lower Bowel Formula". Some herb shops or health food stores carry the brand or you can order it from Dr. Christophers herb shop http://www.drchristophersherbshop.com/default.asp

There is no set amount that you take, you have to adjust it to yourself. But you can start with 2 capsules morning, noon and night. If you still can't go - up it, if you go too much - lower it. Some people have taken as much as 20 capsules 3 times per day to start and some only need 2 a day.

Fresh juicing also helps. I find juicing in the morning is great and gives me added energy too. Apples, carrots, cucumbers, whatever you have on hand. I usually mix with apples because just veggies doesn't taste good to me.

Just a thought - I've thrown this out before, but always hesitate, because it sounds so weird - my chronic consitpation was helped 100% by eating lots of SOLUBLE fiber, and not much INsoluble. That means eating lots of white flour (I know, I know!) I found this diet on the HealingWell IBS forum.

I may do after Wednesday when see gastro consultant again . Dulcolax worked for me today so have felt comfortable most of the day but am now filling with wind and cannot pass it . I'm certain this is more than ibs

Hi, Nanny Bow Bow, and welcome! Be sure to drink a lot of water. That is so essential to help with digestion.

Are you sure it isn't caused by medication? I say this because I was hospitalized six times in a three week period of time because of partial bowel obstructions. I would be admitted and they stopped my medications. I would get better and, when they sent me home, I was instructed to start up my medications again. I would and would have another obstruction within a day or two. I got so I was afraid to eat anything.

Finally I put two and two together when I was also becoming very dizzy. It was my blood pressure. It was too low! I was checked out and my blood pressure was 62/30. Yep, you read that right. I had lost a lot of weight and my blood pressure went back to normal but I was still on blood pressure medication. Once I stopped the medication, I have been fine...thank goodness!

I do hope you figure this out. It is so uncomfortable, but I don't think I need to tell you that.

I don't remember if I mentioned it or not, but I started taking coconut oil. Not only does it help with constipation, it makes my skin soft. Worth a try. Also eat a lot of apples.

Thank you Karen but my prob seems to be my waste not moving down my bowel to rectum only so far even tho colonoscopy was clear . Seems tome that's why once the laxative stimulus wears off my bowel stops being able to move stuff along so I fill with wind

The best way to describe my mother's symptoms is it just stops moving.
She's been hospitalized two times for it due to stomach pains and throwing up because the food gets backed up.

Oh I see . I feel sick but haven't vomited . It's more my bowel stopping before stuff gets pushed to rectum . I am scared stiff it will be my stomach pushing on the bowel making it hard for it to work the final bit . I hope I'm wrong of course . I hope it is ibs that will settle down . I really appreciate the support of everyone on here .
