Last week I had to have a 30 foot live oak tree cut down. I was very sad about it but it was lifting my driveway and also did nearly a thousand dollars of damage to my water system. On Tuesday they came out to grind down the trunk. I was told I would have about 3-5 garbage bags of ground wood chips to take care of.

They spent about a half an hour grinding and after they left I went out to check it out. The circumference of the area that was ground was about 6 feet and the pile of chips was about 5 feet tall! I couldn't believe my eyes! But I had to get rid of this since I live in a deed restricted area.

I got my shovel, garbage bags, and can and started shoveling. I did pace myself but have been shoveling for two days. shocked I don't think I ever want to see a wood chip again. It was like they were reproducing while I was dragging the bags down to the street and lifting them in a pile. Trust me, that was no easy task either. The final tally was 43 bags of wood chips.

I was totally exhausted but am so proud of myself for tackling this job. I did it! yeah I have a real feeling of accomplishment and I actually helped my muscles. Now that really surprised me. I thought I was going to be in a mess for days. But, I had been having really bad pain right in the shoulder blade area since April when I didn't pace myself when spreading 48 bags of mulch. I couldn't get rid of the pain no matter what I did. But I think the shoveling motion used those tight muscles and stretched them out because that pain is gone.

Yes, it was insane of me to tackle such a project but that's the perfectionist in me. I can't help myself and my daughter gets quite upset about some of the things I will do and not wait for her. But I am waiting for her now. Tomorrow she and another friend are getting the top soil and sod and we will be finishing the task...once and for all. I do miss my tree and thought about getting a smaller Japanese Maple or something....can you believe that? nono I considered that for about 2 seconds. turn

I think we have the same mind set! Lol Its hard for me to wait for my husband to do it. I have got lots better since I know it upsets him when I pick up something too heavy. Glad your muscles are doing better. Sorry you lost your tree.

Poor tree and poor you! Next time, enlist some help!

But, good job. Sometimes, things just need to be done. So, we do them. Yes, it hurts, but it isn't permanent.

Bravo, Sherrine!  Holy mackerel--43 bags!! shocked shocked shocked

I thought it was bad a couple of months ago when I helped lift about 7-8 forty-pound bags of garden fertilizer, but that now sounds like nothing.  Whew!  I'm glad you got it accomplished.

The Japanese maple sounds pretty. :-)

I'm amazed you were able to do that. I would of been in such pain.

We took out some old trees on our land that were a nusance, too.
My father planted a rock garden full of roses with a birdbath in the center where we lost one of our 100 yr old oaks. The 200 yr old one has a mimosa tree growing in it.

It does feel good when we accomplish things..and at times we are capable of more than our muscles say...it s hard to push it at times when we are not sure how hard our body may push back..

Amazing! And very good for you! :)

You'll always remember that you did that. There's a wall in my living room that I managed to paint all by myself while my family was gone, several years back. It about did me in, but now it's a satisfaction to look at.

Hope your muscles continue to feel better!

Thanks everyone. I seem to be fine....just tired. The topsoil was put down and the new sod laid and I didn't lift a finger. My daughter got the stuff, came here without telling me, and completed the job. She didn't want me to do anymore so that's why she did this. God bless her. I'm so fortunate to have wonderful children.

I agree that when we need to do something or if we really want to do something, we can. This isn't something I planned but HAD to take care of so I did it and, Debbie, this will be my "painted wall". LOL Now, if I could only figure out how to put a couple of pictures of my gardens in the back on the forum......You all would love it. My back yard is mostly gardens with grass meandering through it. Soooo peaceful.

Major congratulations on a job well paced and done!!

If you're serious about wanting to learn how to post pictures I can show you, it's pretty easy - all you really need is a photobucket (or similar) account to host your photos.
