I think this is the research you are referring to: http://uanews.ua.edu/2012/09/surgeon-ua-professor-team-in-new-approach-to-pain-treatment/
There has been a lot of research that has connected CFS (and many auto-immune disorders) to latent HSV infections (there are many). Not nearly enough research has been done regarding the possible connection with Fibro (likely due to the earliest research showing a lack of connection). These docs at UA have found that treating Fibro with a combination of anti-viral (usually used to treat cold sores) and Celebrex is working really well. They are about to go into stage 3 trials and I'd love to get in on that.
Part of the problem with making this connection is that there are several HSV viruses and almost everyone on the planet has at least been exposed to them (mono, cold sores, shingles, oral and genital herpes, among others) so almost everyone tests positive to the latent virus; but, that doesn't mean they've ever shown symptoms. For the Epstein Barr virus (which has been connected to CFS and others) there are 3 antibodies that they test for, one shows if you've been exposed, the others show if you have a current or have had a post infection. The blood tests are getting better and better and I'm really surprised that I've not been able to find more current research attempting to connect these viruses (especially Epstein Barr given the similarity in symptoms) to Fibro.
