We have a new member who has posted in several threads that, according to Dr. Mercola, fibromyalgia is usually undiagnosed hypothyroidism. I realize this member is only trying to help. To me, though, this is basically implying that fibro isn't a true illness. It is true that hypothyroidism has many of the same symptoms as fibro and that's why it has to be ruled out before a diagnosis of fibro is given. We also have members on here that have been diagnosed with both illnesses.
If you read What Else Could It Be in Fibro 101, you will see hypothyroidism listed as one of the illnesses that should be ruled out...along with things like lupus and Lyme disease. These lists come from places like the Mayo Clinic.
You don't need a holistic doctor to get help for fibro. Many of us, including me, have gotten great help and suggestions from medical doctors. But, if holistic doctors are you choice, that's fine, too. I'm sure there are some wonderful ones out there just like there are wonderful medical doctors.
Fibromyalgia is recognized by the American Medical Association, the American College of Rheumatology, the National Institutes of Health. And the World Health Organization...just to name a few. It is a true illness and most doctors believe it is a neurological problem...not a thyroid problem
I just wanted to clarify this.
