OT: Anyone do fabric art/landscape quilts, etc.? Suggested books to learn?

I've seen many gorgeous photos online of landscape quilts and fabric art. Beautiful!

Does anyone here do either or both of those? Is it difficult to learn, and how much sewing 'know how' is actually involved? Also, is a sewing machine needed or can they be done by hand?

This seems like an interesting winter craft and has always interested me, but I would like to know how difficult and involved it is. I especially like the scenes that use various art techniques, including paints, Sharpie markers, etc.. I suppose just about anything could be added to the fabric to make pictures, correct?

I'm not much into sewing, except by hand, so I wonder if that would be an issue.

Could anyone recommend some beginner books on this?

This seems like it would be a good winter project, even in the middle of a mild flare! Looking into this at this time of year, I'd have several months to check out the possibility of doing this type of craft.

Any suggestions, hints, tips, very welcome! Thanks. :-)

I used to do hand quilting many, many yrs ago. Did I mention many yrs ago. Haven't had the mind set for it in a long time.

You pointed me in the direction of 'about.com minis' a few yrs ago, and I found they had many interesting topics. One of those topics was quilting. So I will suggest you ck that out and see if it can be helpful to you.

Quilting is a delightful hobby and you are so creative, I can only imagine how beautiful your quilts will be.

Wow--you have a good memory! I vaguely remember pointing out the 'about.com minis' website to you. Yes--they surely do have lots of interesting topics! I still get the email from the mini site there. Lesley Shepherd does a great job with that. I will check out the quilting topic there.

Gosh, I don't think I'm too creative, though, but thanks for the nice compliment! I just tend to get interested in trying new crafts; something a little different, I guess. I'll bet your hand quilting was beautiful!! Whenever I see beautiful quilts, it makes me want to give it a try.

I took a quilting class in college as part of my art degree. It was fun even though I already knew a lot from my mom teaching me.
I made a wall quilt totally by hand for my final project. I still have it 23 yrs later.
Try doing baby quilts with pictures printed on them. You can quilt around the designs by hand very easily. Just remember short tight stitches.

Great idea, Joy! I'll bet your wall quilt is just beautiful.

I like the idea of doing baby quilts with pictures. I do have a sewing machine, but haven't used it in a long time, and I think I would enjoy relaxing on the sofa doing quilting by hand.

I'll remember the short, tight stitches---thanks for that tip, also! :)

I don't know anything about landscape/art quilting, but I'm learning to do traditional patchwork quilting and really enjoying it. I've found that it's something I can do a little longer than most activities, probably because it's a lot of moving back and forth between the sewing maching and the ironing board and not staying in one position for too long.

My first couple efforts have been hand quilted, and that's also something I can handle fairly well without much pain, other than the odd finger prick! LOL

I've always been very crafty and Fibro has made some of my favorites much more difficult/painful, so I'm exploring alternatives.

Good luck with your exploration and let us know how it goes. I've got a couple ideas for art quilts I'd like to try but figured I ought to learn the basics first. :)

Hi Mari: I'm glad you're enjoying traditional patchwork quilting. Sounds like fun! I did a quick search yesterday and signed up for a couple of emails from some quilting sites. I really need to study up on the basics of quilting and dust off a couple of books, too.

Good idea to move around, too--an added plus!

Hope you will share your art quilts here, once you make some, and if you're able to post them. Would love to see them!
