I'm asking here because I don't know where else to go, and I'm hoping someone can help me identify what happened.
I have Hashimoto and Fibromyalgia. Nothing else that I know of.
I'm 37, overweight as my stupid thyroid is making it impossible for me to lose weight.
I've been more tired lately. I tend to fall asleep on the couch while watching TV at night. I'm active during the day.
While napping on the couch, I got suddenly woken up by what felt like a feeling like I couldn't breath at all anymore. I was simply sleeping. In a normal position. Nothing heavy on me.
I woke up and gasped for air except it felt like nothing could come in. It did, but it felt like I couldn't breath. It was like my lungs couldn't function anymore. Or did so slower than normal. Like in slow motion.
A bit GAAAAASSSSSSSPPPPPPP! My husband who was in the room near by on his computer rushed to me. Asking me if I was ok.
While I was doing this big gasp, I thought to myself "Oh god, am I gonna pas out?"
And then I could breath normally again. It was so surreal and strange.
It happened before, maybe 2-3 times but never that big. I always blamed it on my allergies. But tonight was a big one and I thought I was gonna pass out.
I know, I'm sure it's not fibro related. Maybe it it. But, as many of us have many health issues, I'm hoping someone can shed some light about
what happened.
I'm scared to fall asleep now :(

It happens to me a lot, but I have apnea. Have you ever had a sleep study done?

Not familiar with this symptom, but sure hope you feel better..
Any chance its a medication thing? Have you talked with your dr. about
it?
Sounds a little what people with sleep apnea have?
I would definitely discuss that feeling with your dr.

Oh gee, Anna, that sounds awful!
I really have no insight at all about
this...
Actually, now that I think of it, I've been feeling for maybe the past month or two that when I'm lying down in the afternoon (I can't call it napping because I never get comfortable enough to fall asleep) I have a hard time getting a deep enough breath. It's nothing nearly as scary as what you're describing, but I sure don't like it. It can happen at other times, but not as often.
I also have Hashimoto's. Maybe there's a connection there - ? Anyway, I hope this doesn't keep happening to you!

Asthma can do this. I sometimes will wake up in the middle of the night and it feels like my air has totally been cut off. It is difficult to get air in initially, lots of gasping. Someone recommended smaller meals, and that may help, since acid reflux is a big trigger for asthma when you are lying down.

Anna, maybe you have sleep apnea. What about
getting checked out by a pulmonologist to see if you should have a sleep study done?

Sounds like sleep apena to me, I have it and used to wake up every 15-20 minutes gasping for air. Now I sleep with a machine and sleep 10 hours a night, it's wonderful. For sure get a sleep study done.

Sleep apnea is very common with thyroid problems.
Get a sleep study as soon as possible. Untreated sleep apnea will lead to stroke or heart attack.

My husband used to gasp like that and never wake up enough to realize. When he had his study, they found out he was at 60% oxygenation. definitely get that checked out. Many people don't realize that sleep apnea can be dangerous.
Let us know how it goes.
