Hi Everyone,

I wanted to share with you about the three hour car ride my husband took me on to see on a doctor on the gulf coast. We stopped every 45 minutes so I could stretch and I noticed that when I ate a snack my swallowing issues gave me more problems, my sinus issues were affected, and my overall pain was worse.

I came across an article that talks about the symptoms of multiple chemical sensitivity. I've know I had it for years and my rheumatologist diagnosed me with it.

According to this article, it's caused from being exposed to chemicals in your past. I definitely was.

Whenever we're driving, I push the recirculation button so we're not bringing outside air into the car. We had that on. I imagine that it helped with following the many vehicles we encountered.

The latest research on MCS shows that when our internal stress system are activated for long periods the blood brain barrier becomes more permeable allowing things to reach the brain that normally wont.

Second the liver detox system become impaired so we can become toxic on tiny amounts of things and have adverse drug reactions

Then you add phobic reactions that are increased when cortisol is high (fibro) and you have the recipe for MCS

I definitely have both , fibro and chemical sensitivities...

I am so sensitive to newspaper print..instant headache, dizziness, tightness in throat if one comes in the house, also store ads

MCS sounds awful. Do people with MCS know what their triggers are, or could it be anything? And just wondering, do you use special household cleaners and what kind?

Wow, Ljm, that must be difficult to avoid newspaper print.

Thanks for your interest, nightngale. I know what my triggers are: automobile exhaust, sometimes perfumes, most cleaning products, chemicals, and the asphalt plant when it's operating which is located a couple blocks from me. My husband and I use Seventh Generation products for cleaning.

I feel lucky to know what my irritants are and not just chalk them up to fibro.

There is a whole set of forums for those with MCS. I think it's on Yahoo. I thought I had it bad until I read some of their stories, include those about not even being able to leave the house because their sensitivities are so bad. It's terribly sad.

Thanks for that info, bwfm, I don't see it as too big of a deal for myself but to not be able to go out of the house, that would be horrible.

Living in the city, there can be automobile exhaust to contend with especially if a person lives near a highway.

Living in the country, there is exposure to pesticides for some. It would be nice if everyone could live in an area where they don't come across much of either.

Ljm, can I ask if you were exposed to a lot of chemicals and electrical current in your lifetime? What I've also been hearing is a metal retainer in the mouth can bring on issues with EMS. I have one of those because I had braces.
