I've come to accept it, cilly. And I have noticed the worse I feel, the worse my forgetfulness becomes. So I try to take care of myself the best I possibly can without being too obsessed about
it.

Cilly, cognitive memory problems goes with the territory of Fibromyalgia. When the memory problems started for me, I thought I was getting Alzheimer's. It's frightening, to be sure.
But acceptance is the key. If you stress over it, anxiety kicks in and I have found my memory gets worse under the stress. Also, if I'm overly tired I can't think either. So do laugh it off and keep moving forward. It's nothing to worry about
. You will learn how to deal with it. Know that you are not alone with this.

The root cause of fibro is the reactive or stress arousal centers of the brain stuck on - this produces cortisol that shrinks the hippocampus the major organ of memory...and the only brain structure that is known to regenerate if the cortisol is turned off.
Second when we are stuck in chronic neurological arousal the higher parts of the brain are turned off (cortex) and the survival lower brain stem is dominant. The amygdala and other brain stem structures have no interest in memory or higher cognitive functions....their only function is to keep you alive and run emergency processes in the body.

AndreaM, that's very interesting.
Are you trying to say the less stress we experience both physically and emotionally, the better chance our memory can improve?
I've noticed since I've become healthier and my life less stressful, my memory isn't as bad as it use to be.

Thanks for your support !
Sleep is also affected by it as well I forget to eat many times.Low blood sugar gives me panic attacks.
It's like a cycle.
I need to put alarm for things I guess.

Yes, absolutely. I find it harder to teach dance, and I have to spend more time planning because I forget, for one thing, the kids names, all the time! But two, the worst, I can forget combinations Easily. I have to review more often and over a series of days and I always print out my class info in case I have a brain fog in the middle of class. I used to just do a combination, review a few times, and I was ready to go. Very frustrating....
My favorite class to teach is improvisation! I have guidelines, parameters, rules to explain, etc. but I rarely have to teach a combination, lol! Of course I just love the feel of improv as well. :)

Cilly, sorry if i have asked this before...but when anyone brings up forgetfulness... I have to ask about
their vitamin d levels...
I have foggy times with fibro, like today..the weather changes and some stress have me flaring..so i am foggy..
However when my d drops off .. The forgetfulness was extremely bad...
So just be sure its from fibro and not something else like a vitamin deficiency.

I forget words for things at times. My last year teaching I would forget names, lessons, what I needed to do that day, and forget what I was going to say next.
It's better now but I still have spells of forgetting.

I had horrible memory as a child. Kind of a family joke. I also am one of those people who probably had fibro then too.
When I joined this forum I didn't know memory problems went with fibro. Like Sherrine I thought I was developing dementia problems.
Now I am more relaxed as I learn more and more about
this condition. I still have memory issues but I don't worry so much.
And yes I do think stress really makes all my symptoms worse, including memory problems.

My vit d levels are extremely low so I take supplements but not everyday as I forget.
I surely have dementia as my cognitive skills are bizarre compared to before.
I wonder if blood sugar ,anxiety,Stress and BP ,cognition is all related.
I wonder if there is a diet I can follow to lower my such spells.
Thanks everyone for your feedback.

Cilly, what helps me to remember to take my vitamins in the morning is I put them in a small glass dish alongside my breakfast.

Cilly, that low d could definitely be part of the problem...
How much do they have you taking..and when were you checked?
My forgetfullness got bizarre with the low d.. And also greatly increased pain, dizziness, and weakness... A lot of those things improved greatly when my d came back up.....
Come on , you can take that d and it takes a while but eventually some of your symptoms could be so much better..your dr should be monitoring that to make sure it gets back to normal..

One of the other issues I have is recognizing faces or differentiating. If two kids or adults have somewhat similar features, I get them mixed up for months, even longer. I may even work with these people nearly every day. It goes along with remembering names. It scared me in the work environment, for meetings and such.
I've had this for a good four or five years, when the fibro really started to get worse.

When I teach, I just roll with the punches. If I lose a word, I pause, and someone usually provides it. I can act spacey when I want, so I always smile sweetly and play it off. What always gets me is my shoes in later classes. I fall out of them or tip over really easily.
I have always been very sharp and quick, so my wretched memory wasn't so evident. Now that I have stopped teaching, I discover that my brain is just not as sharp. Like any ability, the memory gets better the more you use it. I try not to let it bug me. it is just another condition of living with fibro.
Tango-I am rotten at names, too. Some schools have lists of students by picture, which I love because then it is easier to recognize them, and connect name with face. The first week of class, I would spend 5 minutes or so going over the roll, forcing myself to verbalize names without prompting. Yeah,it was excruciating, but it worked.

I would remember absolutely evrything about
people but their name..
That was always a glitch for me.. Esp when meeting many in a group at the same time..
I never associated that with fibro.. But when the d was low i forgot way much more..
Since the d got back to normal.. I remember things fine again...

Oh boy, that's quite a topic. Looks like you have thyroid issues too. My thyroid is hard to regulate and that also affects my speech and memory. Drives me nuts. I really hate it but what can you do? I try to get as much sleep as possible. I think it's time to head to bed! LOL.....

I was reading a Dr. Mercola article this morning about
forgetfulness and things we can do to help it. Here's the link:
