Where did you move and how did it turn out?

There is a lengthy and interesting thread about where is the best place to live for fibro. It would be great to hear from people who actually moved and how things worked out.

My hubby has agreed to move for me. It's a huge thing for him.... but how can we do it? We're Canadian. He's been applying for jobs in California (absolute best place for my fibro) and in the Caribbean. Nothing so far.

Did you move to a different country for your condition? How did you do it? What are some things we can do to make this happen?

We are not wealthy so can't just retire somewhere. We need to earn an income.

Looking forward to reading your stories.

Hi Booklvr: I haven't moved, so am no help, but I'm hoping you get some replies.

My doctor has been urging me for years to move to a warmer climate (am in the U.S. upper Midwest). The weather changes are horrible, especially when cooler air arrives. Winter is all about tight, stiff muscles. Being from Canada, you likely deal with similar issues.

Would love to hear from anyone who has moved to a different climate. Good or bad results?

I live in Florida. I didn't move to Florida because of my fibro. I lived in northern Ohio with a lot of cold and snow but not like what you get. My husband had a wonderful job and I had good friends and also family where I lived. So there was no way I would let fibro make me move. I focused on other things besides my health issues and found ways to work around them to do what I wanted to do. But I sure did hurt more up north.

When my husband passed on, we were in the process of moving to Florida. Our home had been sold so I continued with the move because my Mom was down there. Plus, she had just had a brainstem stroke days after my husband died. I needed to take care of her. It was tough. I didn't know anyone there except my mother and she was in intensive care. I had to learn how to get around the area...learn the streets, where the hospital was and how to get there, find good doctors for my various illnesses, etc.

But I have been really blessed. I love Florida and am doing much, much better than I ever did up north. We have about four months where it is hot and humid so I either stay in the air conditioning or I get in my pool. I'm never too hot that way. We also get rain most afternoons in the summer months but I have gotten used to that...unless it's a huge front with a big change in barometric pressure. I feel it then but I also know it will pass so I don't fret over it. The remaining 8-9 months are great and I can be very active, work in the gardens, walk, etc. The sun is always shining so that really helps keeping me happy. I don't suffer from depression now. I didn't know I was suffering from light deprivation until I moved down here!

There are jobs in Florida. Our governor has done a wonderful job of that. Corporations are moving down here probably because we have no state tax. But, Booklvr, there are no guarantees that you will feel like others...no matter where you move. There is no perfect climate for fibro patients. If there were, we would all live there. But I do think getting out of the snow and cold would help you. It did help me quite a bit.

Hi - I just moved to a warmer climate myself, just about as far South as possible, although still in the States. We have some family here, and I am retired, so it made it easier that way.

Sherrine, I was interested how you talked about driving in a new place. I have moved many times before but I have never had this fear of driving as I do here. I am near panic about getting lost on the way to an appointment, dealing with the traffic (a lot of it), etc. I know I don't have much choice, and am going to try short trips at a time, but I still am so anxious.

Anyway, Booklver, sorry to ramble.i hope you can find a place where you feel better. Warmer weather definitely helps. I would just recommend looking carefully at the area to see whether other aspects of life ( recreation, traffic congestion, etc.) are something you and your hubby like also.

Hope4, stop being fearful! That causes stress, pain, anxiety, and a host of other issues. It's all negative. Have confidence in yourself. Look at it as a challenge!

I was apprehensive when I started driving around town. I actually drew a map for myself after venturing out many times. I would head out and drive to see what was around me. I watched for landmarks along with street signs. I would drive down the main streets and note the more major intersections. Once I felt comfortable with that, I would turn down the major intersections and investigate them and then turn around and go back home.

It was a process but something I had to do. I now can drive all over town. I like to read street names and can remember sometimes where I saw that name months later so this is a great exercise for my mind!

Mind your I'm severely hearing impaired so I couldn't call for help on a phone and who would I call anyway! LOL. I won't let health issues run my life so I just stepped out...baby steps...until I felt comfortable. Now, since I'm familiar with this area. I can use MapQuest or Google Maps to find my way to unfamiliar places.

So relax. Look at it as an adventure. You will find neat things in your area and it's just good getting out and about.
