What is "humanism in medical education"?

Humanism in health care is characterized by a respectful and compassionate relationship between physicians, as well as all other members of the healthcare team, and their patients. It reflects attitudes and behaviors that are sensitive to the values and the cultural and ethnic backgrounds of others.

It means that the physician has a more patient-as-an-individual-centered approach to practicing medicine. Most doctors do not have much practical experience with the elusive bed-side manner. They have too many other things to do, which are more important medically, if not personally.

In truth, would you prefer a doctor who was great at responding to your emotions and lousy with your condition?

This is starting to change, as many medical schools are offering required courses in patient communication.

Sounds like a keeper, IMO.

They became doctors because they like science, or they wanted the prestige/money. Very few people become doctors because they are nice and they want to help people. Doctors are, and I realize I am generalizing here, very intelligent, able to memorize and recall information, focused, unemotional, able to withstand stress, work with very little sleep, and, above all, managed to get through 7-10 years of higher education, with at least three of those years being highly competitive, rewarding of those who have an excellent work ethic who manage stress effectively. I hate to sound negative--but people who cannot hack the stress/mental rigor of the work usually leave in the first year. I have seen it in my own field,to a lesser extent. Some might argue that medical school be kinder--but there is a method in the madness of training professionals. It is necessary to cut those who cannot manage the standards or the working conditions.

I would also add that lack of emotional connection is important, even though others might disagree with me on this. Docs have to be observant and objective, balance a lot of information effectively and accurately. Feeling empathy would slow down the process of accurate diagnosis AND would be incredibly hard on the physician.

My dr always takes enough time with me..but like most humans , he has his flaws also.

They are not perfect and we need to remind them of what we need at times.

My insurance does not require his input , so when i have felt like he was not doing enough for me at times.. Would just call a specialist and go be seen..usually i just sign myself up for some therapy which gets me over some rough spots..

I can seem to handle the fibro, unless i get an injury or something that adds to the load , then i need some help .

I also think our docs can be different depending on the day..their lives can also be complicated and they can be more or less attentive based on that..
