I'll be seeing my dentist tomorrow who is eager to put a few implants in my mouth. With having so many sensitivities even to some metals, I'm not sure I want to do this. I've read they use titanium now but I've heard that some people have allergic reactions to this too because of trace metals that might be included with the titanium.

My question is: have any of you had implants done and had a bad reaction to it? I can't imagine having them placed into my jaw and the pain that might result in the long run. I don't want to add any aches to the mix for the long term.

Why is he eager to put implants in? Are you having problems with your teeth? Can’t a bridge work for you? Since you used the word “eager”, I’d personally be eager to get a second opinion! Implants are very costly.

Won’t crowns work for you? I have more crowns than Queen Elizabeth and some I’ve had over 30 years! They are great! Also, if this is of help to you, there is metal as a base with the enamel tooth over it. I’m very allergic to metal. If I wear costume jewelry, I get a rash in minutes that proceeds to blisters so all my jewelry is fine jewelry. But the metal in the crowns doesn’t bother me at all.

Since YOU don’t sound eager to have this done, don’t do it. Usually people who have implants choose to go that route instead of a bridge. They don’t have a dentist pushing for them. They might suggest an implant but aren’t “eager” to get patients to do that. I know the cost would be prohibitive for me. Really think about this one

Thanks so much, Sherrine, for your reply. I do have a few crowns in other areas of my mouth and I did have a bridge where I need implants.

I had a root canal that went wrong under the bridge that use to be in the area where I need implants. I came down with a pretty bad gum infection. I'm no longer seeing that dentist and the endodonist he recommended for my root canal.

So I would love to hear if anyone has had implants and if they later regretted having them done.

I had to have an implant years ago because my back upper molar broke in half and had to be surgically removed. Long story short, it was an emergency situation because it broke on Friday and I couldn't be seen until Monday. My face was swollen and I was in horrible pain. Also the teeth next to it were a partial bridge.

I hadn't eaten anything that day so they were able to sedate me a take the tooth out and put a bone graft in. Then after that healed I had the implant put in.

I haven't had any problems at all. I also have lots of crowns too. In fact I recently had one put in. I would only do the implants if that was the only option. I would probably get a second opinion. All of it is so expensive!! But I did not have a choice. And as I said I have had no problems with the implant.

I love this most recent dentist of mine and I trust him for the most part. He's holistic, he has the latest equipment, and he was the one who discovered my serious gum infection when my prior dentist and the endodonist associated with him believed the infection was gone. This endodonist had worked on my old root canal four times. She took an xray prior to that 4th time, worked on me a 5th time, and declared the infection was gone without taking another xray. Trouble was my symptoms were still there. The infection was far from gone.

One thing of interest might be for those of us who have sjogrens, we tend to have issues with our teeth no matter how well we take care of them.

Puppylover, could you share whether you have sensitivity to metals like the nickle found in some earrings?

Thanks for the support in this post. I went to see my dentist this morning and not only would I probably need the implants but a bone graph too. My lower jaw is too thin to support the implants.

It sounds way too costly. Luckily the missing teeth are at the back of my mouth not the front.

I cannot wear any earrings with nickel in them. I tried the earrings for sensitive ears and they made my ears sore and itchy.

I really don't wear any earrings anymore.

I have had three implants. The process is long, and not much fun, but the end result is amazing. It really is like having your own teeth back. I am very grateful for them. Costly yes, but for all the work that is involved, I can understand the high price.
I do not have sensitivity to metals, but do deal with fibromyalgia like you.

Thanks so much to you all for your replies.

I'm still on the fence concerning the implants. I saw the oral surgeon on Friday and he was telling me how much my jaw bone is narrowing and it could crack someday if I don't have the implants done.

But I've also heard that having implants can cause a lot of complications like increased pain. And I don't need that.

My biggest question is if I don't go with the implants, and my jaw continues to narrow, will I be able to wear dentures if need be someday? Not that any of you mentioned this, but I could never consider wearing a metal type retainer. Ouch!

AM, dentures are the pits!! At least this has been my experience the past nearly 10 months. I am now on my 2nd set in 6 months because of them not being fitted properly. Bone loss occurs when teeth are pulled. Yes, you can be fitted with what is called implants on the dentures, they are expensive. They put an implant in the gum & it clips to the denture. You do have to have bone in order to be a candidate for this procedure. I plan to visit a new place to see if there is anything that can be done with this new set that was made the end of December. The biggest problem is I have a small mouth & the trays used to make impressions were too big for my mouth. They claim they used the smallest one they had. I have spent a lot of money for these dentures.

Believe me, if implants had been possible for me it would have been money well spent. Sorry, I got off on a rant & did not answer your question. Yes, a person can be fitted for dentures but the more bone loss the poorer the fit. When teeth are pulled the other teeth will shift & move. Another issue with losing teeth is once the teeth start spreading, it affects all of our teeth.

Thanks so much, straydog, for your story. I say the bigger the story the better.

I just emailed my GP through her patient portal to ask her advice. She's knowledgeable when it comes to my fibromyalgia issues along with my nerve pain due to my old injuries. She may have some stories for me when it comes to some of her patients having had implants done.

Or she might consider implants to be out of her field of expertise.
