Head, Eye, Face Pain from Frames; Can't Wear Contacts

57 y/o female dx Fibromyalgia and Sjogrens. I have never been to tolerate eye correction due to pain due to any amount of pressure from glasses frames and/or dry eye from Sjogrens. So no sunglasses, reading glasses (titanium frames for short periods of time), hydrating contacts, hard contacts and now cannot wear Scleral Lenses either! I'm a photographer so this is really challenging... I have not worked for 18 mos. now since I need BOTH distance and reading correction.

3 Questions:
1. Has anyone had clear lens exchange or know the latest Pro & Cons? The bifocal issue was a conflict 3 years ago when I explored this very expensive option.

2. Is there any nerve numbing or obliteration for the temple and behind the ears?

3. Has anyone had success with off-label use of Botox?

4. Anyone heard of or used IPL to treat severe dry eye to the point contacts were a viable choice? (Restatis does not help enough and the other drops are cost prohibitive...not covered by my insurance so I have not tried.)

Hi, Calalillies, and welcome. We have only had a couple of people complain about wearing glasses on this forum so I don’t have a lot of info to help. But I do wear glasses and have for decades.

I have a very lightweight metal frame with sunglasses lenses that will clip on to the frames with magnets. This way I don’t have to haul around two pairs of glasses. I used to wear plastic frames but have found the metal frames are so much lighter and the nose pads can be adjusted along with the arms of the frame. You don’t need the frames to press into the sides of the head. I have seen people take off their glasses and have indentions in their heads from the frames! I don’t have that.

I use a place that allows free adjustments as long as you own the frames and when I do buy new frames I usually have to have them adjusted several times before they don’t bother me. I have also had the nose pads replaced and adjusted too.

If you haven’t already, try the ultra thin plastic lenses they have out now. I found a lot of info about them on Google. I’ve had the same glasses for 19 years because my prescription hasn’t changed so I don’t have these new lenses but I know someone who does and they really like them. Yes, I know how fortunate I am with my glasses since I can’t wear contacts either. They actually hurt my eyes even though I don’t have dry eye.

Can you see if you can take a little mor4 Restasis so it does help you? This is cyclosporine. I have had two dogs with dry eye. My first dog I took to a canine ophthalmologist because she was rapidly losing her vision. Unfortunately they were doing the blind study on cyclosporine and they wouldn’t give any for my dog and she did go blind. So, when my next dog developed dry eye, I was hysterical! But she was put on cyclosporine and it worked beautifully. She lived 15 years and never lost much eyesight. So I suggest that you talk to your eye specialist about possibly using a little more. Reastasis. I see there is a Restasis MultiDose too! I’d find out about that and I’d also see if it’s safe to take Restasis every eight hours rather that every twelve hours.

So sorry to read about the difficulties you are having with glasses. I've been in glasses 50 years & do remember very well glasses being so heavy! I am near sighted, have astigmatism & wear a progressive no line bifocal. Call it vanity or whatever, I did not want a line showing up on my lenses. Thankfully with the new technology I buy the best plastic lenses made on the market & yes they are pricey but worth it. I wear what is called a half frame, half metal & half plastic & they are very light. I've learned over the years how critical it is to have a proper fitting pair of frames. I have a small face, my temple length is 135, anything over that is too big & will increase the weight of the glasses.

I go to an eye dr for my vision testing & many years ago I went into Target one day to their optical department. I had a lady spend over an hour with me & she found the perfect fitting frame for me. I had never had that happen in all of my years of wearing glasses. My Target carries high end frames which I buy, the cheap ones do not hold up or hold their shape well.

Have you checked to see if you are a candidate for the laser surgery to correct your vision? That may be an option for you.

When you look at frames again, see if they carry a titanium version. Mine are super light and very durable and I have progressive bifocal lenses. I find that the better quality of lenses are much lighter. I agree with Susie about checking into your insurance coverage for laser surgery, that would be your best option - especially with your difficulty in wearing glasses.
