I have officially had fibromyalgia since 2013, but had sporadic symptoms for at least 15 years before that. I have been as active as possible, digging garden beds, hauling wheelbarrows of rocks, dirt and mulch hither and yon on our property. I have noticed over the last 5-7 years that it is getting more difficult for me to climb chairs or get up off the floor.

I searched the web about this since it seems every new symptom seems to be linked to fibro. I found one study and a number of anecdotal reports about upper and lower limb weakness in fibro. My takeaway is that I need to slowly restart my weight training again.

Fibromyalgia has been recognized for many years as a true illness and it’s not “all in our heads”. You just have to make sure your PCP believes in the existence of Fibro. There are still some doctors out there in the Dark Ages.

They are now thinking this is more of a neurological problem than a muscular problem.

I do know about the weakness in the arms and legs. My legs are becoming an issue. I was diagnosed with Fibro 35 years ago. I am now 75 years old and really am noticing leg weakness. This past Christmas I got down on my hands and knees to straighten the skirt under the Christmas tree and I couldn’t get back up! That never happened to me before. I almost had to call 911 to send someone out to get me off the floor! That’s frightening. I didn’t think about this perhaps being from Fibro though but I guess it could. I was thinking because of this pandemic I have done entirely too much sitting. I do stay active, take care of my home and I’m also a huge garden lover and my back yard is a garden with paths of grass meandering through it, so that takes work too.

But I will have to play this by ear and see how things go for me. I’ll be doing more exercise in the summer months.

I had noticed that I really was having trouble getting up off the floor for at least 2 years and it is getting worse, so I discussed it with my physical therapist. I'm getting PT after tripping backwards over our little dachshund. She said it wasn't unusual in people with fibro and is starting exercises for me to work on that issue.

I can sure relate to the difficulty of getting up from the floor. Just had an experience today while unplugging my computer. The outlet is behind the desk, so it took a lot of maneuvering of both the desk and me. Not a pretty sight. I'm glad no one saw me.

Some months back, I saw a Yes2Next video on this very subject. I was kind of upset with myself today, not recalling the steps that were shown. If you want to see the video, it's on YouTube and called "How to get down to and up from the floor." I will review that soon!

I also saw that physical therapists Bob and Brad have a similar video on YouTube called "How to get off the floor." Have not checked that out yet, but I hope to soon.
