Jerry is complaining of leg pain in both legs, like if your standing up and put your arms to your side, in that area.  Do ya'll that could be from the tumor on the L3 vertebra or from the liver problems?  He's a lot weaker today, has ate some, but just feels sick and hurts alot.  Thanks for your imput.

Hi, Okielady.  I think it's most likely that the pain is caused from the L3 involvement.  Even if there is a ruptured or bulging disk and not cancer, there will be severe pain going down the legs.  There are so many nerves that branch off from the spine.  Bone cancer is one of the most painful cancers that exist.  I think a call should be made to his doctor and a request for a pain med Rx made.  For those who say that pain medication is not good for the liver, I maintain that quality of life is more important and I don't feel that anyone should suffer.  It is massive amounts of NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories) over a long period of time that cause liver and kidney damage.

They have him on Oxycodone, and he took 2 earlier this evening finally.  For some reason he has decided he shouldn't take the pain meds so much.  I told there is no reason to hurt and he finally did take some.

Oh, that's good, Helen.  Maybe he can get some sleep.  If he gets to the point where they don't help, then a break-through pain med may be prescribed.  Hospice has great experience and knowledge with meds and knows just what needs to be done.

Hello Helen, The leg pain maybe a combination of the liver cancer and the L3 involvement. Connie is right on about the L3 involvement causing leg pain but my husband did not have a bad back at all and he had bad leg pains where you are describing it. My husband wouldn't take any pain meds at all, until hospice got involved. And then the hospice nurse and doctor had to talk him into it....He wouldn't listen to me. He actually thought that I was killing him. It broke my heart but I had to tell him it wasn't me it was the liver cancer killing him.

I called the oncologist today and his nurse called and after talking to Jerry about the leg pain, she called the dr and then called back and the doctor is concerned about the pain and wants a MRI done on his spine to see if there is any compression causing the pain.  Today has been one of those days where I don't know which is going to kill him first me or the disease.  He has a lot of anger about the pain and what is happening and he really is sick, so he's grouchy and miserable and making me the same.  But I know it's the disease that is making him this way.  I just hope he's not actually getting worse.  It really is scarry not knowing for sure what to do next.  Thanks to all of you, this forum really is a great place to get educated and just vent a little.  I really don't want to vent to the kids and scare them more than they already are.
