Pregnant on Medication

Hi everyone, I have had Autoimmune Hepatitis for 9 years and just recently found out I may be pregnant. I currently take 100mg of Imuran daily and 15mg of Prednisone every other day. I know I should be talking to a doctor about this and I plan to but at the moment I am not able to see one for other reasons. My question is has anyone taken these medications during early pregnancy and still went on to have a healthy baby?


Any information at all on either medicine would be really helpful.

Hi, Nibblesz.  You really do need to see a doctor about this, ASAP.  The only info I have comes from Mosby's Medical Drug Reference.  It says prednisone is a pregnancy category B and Imuran is a D.  Unfortunately, I don't know what those specific categories mean.  Perhaps you can Google it or research some other way online.  You should call whoever is prescribing those meds and ask that doc about it.

Thank you hep93. I appreciate the information, and I'm trying my hardest to get new insurance so that I can go see him soon but if that doesn't work then I guess I'll have to try and be seen at the E.R

Nibblesz, you should be able to call and ask how that medication affects an early pregnancy.

Hi Nibblez,

I would definitely talk to your doctor about it. I also have AIH and  remember the one thing that my doctor mentioned to me was the effects of the medication on an unborn child (i haven't had children yet)... i have two doctors... the one i see most often said that he has had patients that stay on the medication while pregnant and also others that get off while pregnant, so I think that you should call and talk to him.

Have you been on Imuran and Prednisone for the last 9 years?

I can't take Imuran, i was on 50mg and continued to get horribly sick every time I took it.  My follow up appt is Monday and I guess we will see what other medications I can take.

Thank you and to answer your question yes, Imuran && Prednisone have always been in my mix of medicines.

Welcome to the forum. I agree that you really should talk to your doctor about any and all medications you take and what effects they may have on your new baby. I honestly do not know what the possible side effects could be on an unborn child. Congrats on your new additions and will keep postive thoughts and prayers that all your questions will be answered.
