Best time for blood work?

I have to get checked for hepatitis and to also get my lipids checked.  I'm sure I'm fine and don't have these diseases.  But I have to get this checked because my liver enzymes were elevated in other blood work.  I had a bad drug reaction so I suspect that my liver enzymes WILL go back to normal soon.

As for the hepatitis and lipid blood test, is there a best time to check for this?  I want to get the most accurate reading.  Should I eat before the tests, or no??

Hi, friendlygal.  If you have not been exposed to hepatitis, then it doesn't matter when you get tested.  As for the lipids, they will probably want a fasting blood test.  Check with the lab that will be doing the screening, or with your doctor's staff.

Thanks!  I can't imagine that I have been exposed to Hepatitis, but I am supposed to be tested for it so I thought to take it at the best time possible, just in case...

I will call the lab regarding the lipids test (it's listed on the same "ticket" as the hepatitis testing).  If I need to fast for it, then I'm surprised the doctor didn't tell me anything...

hep93, thanks so much for telling me about the fasting!  I just called the lab since you mentioned it, and I AM supposed to fast for 12 hours before the lipids test!  I'm surprised the doc didn't tell me but that's ok...Since it's on the same write up as the hepatitis test, should I just fast for both of them?  Would fasting give me the best hepatitis reading?

It really makes no difference for the hepatitis test.  Are you also having liver enzymes done?  If so, that should also be fasting.  I think it's always better to have fasting results than nonfasting.

I thought that I orginally had liver enzymes checked and that that reading showed that they were elevated.  I thought that that was why I have to get checked for hepatitis in the first place.  I'm not sure though...Some kind of liver functions were elevated...

If I'm supposed to fast for 12 hours, then I guess that I can just stop eating at 7 and then get checked tomorrow morning, right?  I mean the fasting hours must include bed time hours (correct me if I'm wrong)...That's easy...I might even fast for more hours than they said (more than 12)...

Yes, as long as it's at least 12 hours for a true fasting reading.

Thanks for the good wishes! I took the blood test today.  I should find out what's up in 2 days...

I was overdosed the potent antibiotic levaquin by a doctor at a clinic.  Since then I've had a lot of trouble walking and my feet even turn purple (although I'm finally starting to walk better and I hope this continues to improve!)... So I'm assuming that the elevation in my liver functions is from this drug. The hepatitis check is just to make sure that it's not from that...
