My sister declines but yet has good days that give me that glimpse of hope that she won't be in so much pain and so weak.  I get so mad as the doctors don't seem to want to manage her pain.  Plus our last trip to ER was horrid, they were rude and not very helpful to her.  It seems that if you are alcoholic even if you quit they show very little compassion.  Do they not know with their medical knowledge alcoholism is a disease, and not a good one? It makes me so sad.  I have lost my faith, hope, enjoyment of life because seeing her suffer is worse then seeing her go.  Example tonight I went over and she was just in so much pain.  Her stomach is swollen bigger then a woman 9 mos pregnant.  Granted my sister drank daily even after she found out she had Hep C and ESLD, but she has paid enough karmically.  If she can't at least have some joy in life then why must she have to linger.  We euthanize our pets when they suffer, sometimes I think humans should have that choice.

Autumnrain, I am so sorry for all that your family and your sister are going through with this disease. I can only imagine how hard it is to watch her suffer. Has anyone talked to your family about getting Hospice involved? I have heard that they are really good for the family and the person suffering. They may be able to help relieve her suffering and also give some support to the family.

You and your sister are in my prayers.

Autumnrain, it is good to hear from you, even if the news is not good.  You are right--there is still a stigma attached to alcoholism, and even more so to IV drug use--even if it was 40 yrs. ago, as is the case with me.  The only place I have not encountered that judgmental attitude is at Mayo.

Butterfly had a good suggestion about Hospice.  From what I understand, that requires a doctor's referral.  Does your sister have a hepatologist or even a primary care doc who is aware of her medical status?  Also, you mention how large her abdomen is--has she been having paracentesis (draining?)  I know that helps to relieve pain and pressure for a little while and some have to have it regularly.

Remember to take care of yourself through all this.  My prayers are with your sister, you, and your family.

Hi everyone...This morning I could not reach Sherrie, and I had that sick feeling last night. So I told my Mom we needed to go over and make sure she was not on floor or gone. So we went over at 11:00am and found her dead. Sherrie was still warm to touch, but her head was hanging over edge of bed, her nose was bleeding. I don't know if she hit her nose, or if this was normal for a ESLD death. It is so hard she was my best friend, along with my Mom. It was horrible seeing her like this, guilt rished in that I did not stay there last night but she wanted me to leave. I am seconding guessing my decision to leave. It makes me sad she died alone and in pain. My sister had just turn 51 January 2nd. I am like on a merry go round of sorts, I am glad she is out of pain. Yet I feel as if part of my life just got sucked away. RIP-Sherrie 1-2-58 to 1-11-09

I am truly sorry to hear of your loss.   Don't second guess yourself.   Your news is what we dread and sometimes hope for, but we are never ready.   Take care of yourself.

AutumnRain, I am so sorry to hear that your sister passed.  However, I know how much it was hurting you to see her suffer, so now you can be sure that she is at peace.  And please don't second-guess yourself.  You did what she requested in leaving...that is what she wanted.

Autumnrain, My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I am so sorry that you have lost your sister. But it is only for a little while. You will see her again, and there will be no more suffering to have to watch her endure. She is finally at peace. I agree with everyone else. Don't second guess yourself. You were a good sister and did what you could for her.

I am so empty I have slept 1 hour in 48 hours and tomorrow I am going out to plan for her cremation. I am tired but when I close my eyes thoughts of her rush in and drown me in sorrow, and I think now what. I pray my 80 year old Mom can get well, she has some health issues. Other wise I will be so lost and alone. I made a virtual memorial for Sherrie, but not so sure they allow us to post the link on here.

Autumnrain, I am so sorry for your loss. Please accept my sincere condolenses on your dear sister's passing. We are all thinking of you and praying for you during this sad time. Hang in there, we are here whenever you need us.

No, I have no vested interest in web site, just some place to remember my sister, so if anyone would like to see her site feel free. I arranged for her to be cremated todayno service partially because of money, but our immediate family will gather.

Autumn, It's a beautiful tribute. I did one for my husband. Infact he had 2 of them. But after a year I was able to let them expire.

How are you doing Autumn? I know that it is really tough on you right now. But things will get easier as time goes on. Eventually you will see that light at the end of the tunnel........thoughts and prayers..........
