Hello toolost, I am sorry to hear that your husband is drinking again. With his drinking again his disease will progress a lot more rapidly. I don't remember a rotten egg smell with my husband. It was more of a kind of sweet smell. Maybe it your husband's ammonia levels that are causing it.

I am so ANGRY at my husband. He went missing for 3 days this week, He went on a drinking binge got arrested for DUI. We had a long talk about his alcohol abuse, but will never admit he has a problem!! I was gone to the grocery store earlier for maybe 1-2 hours and when I get home he is passed out on the floor in the garage. I finally got him in the house and in the bed. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. We have been married 22 years. Of course he reminds me that he "drank like a fish" when we met. I reminded him, that is true but he is 49 years old and you have to grow up. I am so angry and our daughter is also angry. Yes, I am calling a counselor on Monday to get us some help, especially her. He will not go. I have stayed with him for all these years, because I knew if I left him he would drink himself to death, well I have stayed with him and he is killing himself. I just needed to vent. Toolost

TooLost, I'm so sorry.  If a person is determined to drink him/herself to death, he's going to do it whether you are there are not.  It just doesn't matter.  So you have to take care of you and your daughter.  Contact a counselor or Al-Anon.  There are even online Al-Anon meetings.  There is nothing you can do to make him stop drinking or go to AA, but you can do something about taking care of yourself in the relationship.  I've been where you are several times...decided I didn't need the drama and left.  You don't need to make a decision right now, but you do need some support.

((((Toolost)))), I am so sorry that you and your daughter are going through this. Most alcoholics have to hit rock bottom to finally smarten up and quit. As much as you try ..........you can not do it for him.....he has to do it for himself. Been there done that............My husband's rock bottom was his first encephalopathy episode. Hopefully yours will hit his rock bottom soon.

 I had 2 liver transplants in 2005. I had Hep C and cirrhosis. I

 got Hep C from a blood transfusion when I was in the hospital

 having my child. The virus can lay dormant in your body for many

 years and my did. I did not have Hep C until 20 years later. The Hep

 C destroyed my liver and caused the cirrhosis. I remember when I

 was itching so bad my dr told me that my billirubin was too high

 and gave me a medicine called Hydroxyzine HCL Tab25 MG. This

 medicine made me very sleepy but it did help the itching. That is

the only medicine I have taken for itching. This is my first time on

 this forum. Hope this helps.

Just wanted to check in, seems like everyone has a lot going on.  My husband was admitted to the hospital last Monday, he was very intoxicated.  They are working on dextoxing him and may be released tomorrow.  Due to an incident, he got very angry and violent with our daughter (he came close to hitting her) I know it's the alcohol, but I can't allow him to return home until I know he will not cause either one of us harm.  He has been spinning out of control, I think since he had the TIPS procedure done, he started to feel better and started drinking heavily again.  I don't think he has it in him to give up the alcohol.  His blood pressure is low and his electrolytes are all over the place.  I suggested to his psychiatrist that I believe he has Heptic encelopathy, I have called his hepatologist to see if he can make some suggestions while he is being treated inpatient.  Has anyone tried calling a doctor's office or a company and a human actually answers the phone??   I dial the numbers and just start pressing Zero.  That is so frustrating.  I am so scared as to what will happen to him.  Toolost

TooLost, I hate those automated systems!  Everyone seems to have them these days.

As far as your husband, I would suggest you get a restraining order.  If he is going to be discharged tomorrow (or even later in the week), he is going to be feeling better and head straight to the liquor store.  He needs inpatient alcohol treatment.  They are usually for 30 days.  That doesn't mean a 30-day miracle, but it gives them the chance to get a little bit of sobriety under their belt, and then transition to AA.  Releasing him from the hospital to home means the time he has been in the hospital will be for nothing.  That's the reality.  So please push for inpatient treatment.  And I really wouldn't allow him back home if he is becoming a potential danger to either you or your daughter.

Thanks for the advice, but I did get a restraining last week. He is supposed to be released tomorrow, I spoke to his doctor earlier today and his electrolytes and liver tests are in a better range and his shakes are better. They have done a lot of group sessions with him in the last 10 days, but they told me that HE is the only one that can do this. I have rented him an apartment and hope to have his things moved in before he is released. Our daughter is still angry/confused about what he did, so I am NOT going to allow him back to the house, probably ever. I have cried many tears in the last few days, that I really don't have any left. I hate this disease and just wish he could have gotten a handle on it. He is really a wonderful person he can fix most anything and is very smart. i am going to miss him living here but I have to protect my daughter and myself. can't finish will have to try later. toolost

TooLost, I am glad you are ahead of my suggestion and are taking steps to protect yourself and your daughter.  I would still suggest to the doctor that your husband could benefit from inpatient rehab, but that's really all you can do.  It would be a voluntary admission, which means your husband could sign himself out 2 hours later...so no guarantee.  He does have to get sober himself, but I'd like to see him get a push in the right direction.  (I'm saying this as a long-time sober alcoholic myself.)

It's not him you hate, but the disease of alcoholism and what it has done to him.  I totally understand that.  Most alcoholics are sweet, intelligent people.  But the alcohol is only a symptom and it's not enough to just stop drinking.  There are usually deeper problems that require help.

I know it's hard for you and very sad, but I applaud your strength and determination in doing what needs to be done.  I wish you much luck, as well as your husband.

Do keep us updated and vent if you need to.

I brought husband home yesterday from hospital. I think the only thing that was accomplished was detoxing him. Since he has been home, all he does is sleep. I got a banana in him this AM. and some ensure and water. He is so weak. He has an appt. with hepatologist Thursday, but if he continues not to eat or drink enough, may have to try and get him sooner. I really hated bringing him home due to what happened 2 weeks ago, but he is too weak to stay by himself. Needless to say my daughter is not thrilled with him being home. She is at work and I am hoping I can help her through her anger. I am really starting to think that his month long drinking binges has done more damage to his liver and at this point not sure if he will get any better. I am so worn out, that I can't sleep or eat, lost 10 lbs. I work full time so not looking forward to the work week if he does not get any stronger.

What happened to the apt. you rented for him?  Is there no one who could just check on him or a friend who could perhaps stay with him temporarily?

I really think you are taking on an awful lot, what with working and a daughter at home.  They really should not have released him if he is that weak.
