Hi, again TJ. I suggest you read the information in the Hepatitis Resources folder at the top of the Hepatitis Forum page. The confusion you speak of is probably hepatic encephalopathy. This is caused by the liver being unable to filter out ammonia and it goes to the brain. The treatment for this is usually Lactulose.
As Worried Girl mentioned, your mom should avoid red meat and alcohol. She could probably benefit from a multivitamin without iron. However, for other supplements you should consult with her doctor first. They could be of no benefit and/or dangerous.
Any idea what the cirrhosis is from? Yes, living donors are used at times, but it depends on the particular transplant facility where she will be seen, and if they do them. Transplant centers are divided into regions. I don't believe she could be listed with different hospitals. Investigate what is available to her in her area and find a center and stick with it. There is a ton of testing that takes place before being placed on a transplant list. You wouldn't want her to have to go through that in more than one center, if it's even allowed.
If she follows a low-sodium diet with no red meat, eats a lot of fresh fruits and veggies, abstains from alcohol, and follows doctors' orders, she could possibly gain some strength and also be around longer than she would otherwise.
She does need to be seen by a hepatologist (liver specialist.)
Yes, she can apply for Medicaid. In the comments section, put "terminal illness." That will speed up the process.
I'm sure others here can give you more information than I have. I'm sure you feel overwhelmed right now, but this is a great place to be able to vent, as well as read the experiences of others.
Hugs,
Connie
