Gallbladder

Does anyone know if Hep C causes the gallbladder to go bad?

I had an ultrasound done on my gallbladder about 3 weeks ago and just found out today that it was bad. Don't know what they meant by that. My daughter took the phone call. And so I was wondering if Hep C is the culprit of it.

Most people I've spoken to with liver problems, had gall bladder problems. At Mass General they remove your gall bladder when they give you a liver transplant. They told me that leaving the gall bladder in was a problem waiting to happen. **David**

MIke had gallstones but could not have surgery due to the risk it posed.. he was not a candidate for surgery..

As far as I know bad liver function can mess with the galbladder. The bile produced as a start of digestion by the liver is of course held in the galbladder, hence bile not being produced correctly causes a problem. But gallbladder issues are not uncommon in todays society with eating and weight issues and is hereditary, everyone in my family has had them removed from the age of 19 to 40. The reason it is removed when you have a transplant is actually the difficultiy of re attaching it per our surgeon, it just adds one more complication during surgery.

We were told that my husband's damaged liver caused his gallstones.  Like Sandi's husband they would not operate on my husband either because of the risks involved.  So he had to suffer with the pain from them. 

I had my gallbladder out 32 years ago......The gallbladder attacks were worse than having my 2 kids.   My doctor said ........the 3 F's were normally the cause of it. 

Fair.........Fat..........and Fifty.   I was fair........and I was fat when I had my first attack....8 months pregnant with my son.   He squashed my gallbadder.  I still owe him for that one!

Connie you are lucky that you don't have any issues from your gallbladder being removed.   I am still having issues......

I had my gallbladder removed the old fashioned way.....had one bad attack that put me in the hospital for 3 days before they could operate! Temp so high I was halucinating, to this day I still say there was vampires in my room sucking the blood out of me...lol! They couldnt remove it through Lap so bummer on that cause later on I had to have part of a Kidney removed and they had to cut from almost spine to belly button cause of all the old scar tissue.....now I look like I won a battle with a large shark....no bikini for me lol. No problems from gallbladder removal though... thankfully

Thanks for all the input. I did call my local liver doctor (the that did the ultrasound) and his nurse said that it could be bile duct blockage or something that starts with a c. Never did understand what she said. But, she did say that the doctor is leaving it up to my transplant doctor to decide what to do. So, I called the center and they told me they have not received anything from either my liver doctor or my pcp. Both of whom had faxed the results of the ultrasound. I go tomorrow to have my ammonia levels checked so I will be asking for a copy of the ultrasound results.

So Connie does that mean no bikini for you either. Also Sandy try to get your own copy of all tests done keep em in a binder just in case, hospitals charge for copies later but at the time of labs etc.... free is a good word just ask

Speaking of shark bites. about 3 days after my transplant, the first thing I thought when looking at my incision, was that it was a badge of honor. Since then all of the transplant people I've met in the hospital, outpatient clinic and online, called their scars, a badge of honor. Any of what we've gone through was a choice between getting better, or dying. Scar tissue is no big deal, compared to the alternative. At an online transplant site I'm on, there's a section by the name of "Show Me Your Scar." Some of them look like Picasso got loose with a scalpel. Be proud you're here to talk about yours, I am. It doesn't matter what the scar is from (gallbladder, transplant, cancer).

After my transplant, having had my gall bladder removed, the doctors had me take a drug called Actigall. After 5 months it was discontinued. I've had no problems without it. Your mileage may vary. **David**
