Spooky, if your dad has been drained before, it means he has ascites. Spironolactone (Aldactone) is a mild diuretic that is potassium-sparing. It is usually given in conjunction with Lasix, a stronger diuretic, which tends to draw potassium from the body along with fluid. If your dad is taking spironolactone, he has fluid retention.
In Dr. Melissa Palmer's book on liver disease, she explains that cirrhosis causes blood vessels carrying blood to and from the liver to become obstructed. The body creates alternate routes or "collateral shunts." Varices result from the formation of these collateral shunts. Ones that are in the esophagus and upper portion of the stomach are likely to burst. This can be a life-threatening emergency. Has your dad had an endoscopy yet? That would be the way they would know if he has these varices and if they need to be banded.
There is a topic called Medical Terms that is thumb tacked at the top of the page. You can check your spellings there.
You might also consider getting Dr. Palmer's book, which covers everything you need to know about
liver disease. It's called Hepatitis & Liver Disease and is available at alibris.com or e-bay.
