my mum is 56 years old.about 4 weeks went to the er with confusion and aggressiveness.doctor called us to say that she has esld however she has been going to the goverment hospital for the past few years with off and on esld symptoms but no one has even told us what was going on.she has has esld from alcohol as well as a disease called bahlazia doc got everything under control now.she has bleeding varices,nose bleeds,jaundice,sleeps a lot,itching of the skin, ascites, and edema as well as her heart is very weak.she eats well and has alot of water.doctor has not put her on any diet

i live in south africa and she is not on medical aid so doctors have ruled out a transplant cos her heart wont take it.now is on meds and hanging on.somedays are good and then other days are bad.she takes spiractin,isosobinade dintrate,thiamine and frusemide and if she does not have a bm then they have given us laxson.i am the eldest of her 3 kids.i am just hanging in there.sometimes i just want to run away as far as possible.its difficult to know that she is slipping away from us.she is tired of taking the water tabs as she has to go to the loo and when she goes to the loo her heart palpatations increase and for a little while she cant see.about 2 weeks ago she also fell cos she could not see.currently seeing our gp and he is giving her vit k injection.i really feel like we have hit a dead end here with mum to get any other treatment.please let me know what to expect next.really worried about her confused

Hey there Cindy... everyone is different... but you can expect more of the same.. probably espcecially given her deteriorated state... avoiding salt and protein.. good ideas for the diet... others will join in.. take a deep breath.. and center yourself... we'll be here along the way... my thoughts and prayers are with you... I CANT REALLY TALK TO THE OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS COS I AM SCARED THEY WILL SAY THAT I WANT THE WORST TO HAPPEN HOWEVER I HAVE READ about ESLD AND I HAVE TO BE STRAIGHT ON THIS MATTER.SO ABIT HEARTSORE AS NOTHING ELSE CAN BE DONE.THE OTHER THING I WANTED TO KNOW SHE HAS THE LEG MOVEMENTS ALL OF A SUDDEN WHEN SHE IS ASLEEP.IS THIS ASSOCIATED WITH ESLD

could be restless leg syndrome...and Mike did have that... and I think some of the others talk about that... He took some medication... so slow it down.. but nothing really seemed to help..I understand ... when I was going through it... didn't seem like anyone really knew about it but the people here... and while I was going through those intense moments... being able to come here helped... up to and including the moments before and after his death.. funeral etc... this place was an oasis in the desert of troubles.... welll take care... my thoughts will be with you today... I HAVE READ about IT NOW AND IT MAKES SENSE NOW.SHE WENT TODAY FOR ONE OF HER CHECK UPS AT THE GP SO WAITING TO GO HOME AND CHECK THE REPORT ON HOW SHE IS DOING.WILL ADVISE YOU TOMORROW ON THE RESULTS.THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR STANDING BY ME .I REALLY NEED THE SUPPORT

oh check in.. others will have way more info than I do... like the med that was oh yeah they used Remeron... for that...think that's the name.. others will join up with us later though I'm sure... let us know how it goes.. Sandi

Hello, Cindy, and welcome to the forum.  You will find a lot of information and support here.  Did you locate the Hepatitis Resources folder that PG spoke about?  It deals with all liver disease, not just hepatitis, and will give you an idea of what to expect.

I don't know if they have privacy laws in S. Africa, but they do here.  Not even family members can get information unless they have Medical Advocacy or Power of Attorney, unless there's a more forthcoming doctor or nurse you get to know.

There are several members who have gone through, or are going through, the same things as you are.  I know they will be of great support to you.

Don't forget to take care of yourself!  Also, I'd like to request that you not post in Caps as it's hard on the eyes and considered shouting in Internet etiquette.  Just type like you did in your first post.

Be sure to check in often as people are off and on all day and night.

hi there.mum been to our gp and he says the fluid retention has improved but i cant see it .shes not as yellow as before though but her body continues to itch.she was at the doctors office when she got one of her "attacks".doctor just checked her and did not even do an ecg to check whats happening.i am a bit disappointed in this if she has another episode like this ER her we come.
what can stop the itching?

udder balm.... or bag balm... its a cream... helped Mike others may have other suggestions

Cindy, is she seeing a hepatologist (liver specialist?) If not, she should. In addition to bag balm or udder cream, she can try colloidal oatmeal baths for itching. Aveeno (don't know if you have that brand in SA) also has a "calming" lotion.

No she not seeing an hepalogist.she is on a goverment plan and goes to a government hospital.however there are always surgeons from the surgical side that visits her.i will check on these creams and baths for her.thanks for you guys help.much appreciated

Cindy, try to find out if they have a hepatologist there and if she could be seen by one for evaluation of her condition and treatment suggestions.
