Good evening to all,

Several of you have mentioned elevated ammonia levels. Tonight Im watching my other half and he would appear to be drunk to others, yet he doesnt drink. He is also falling asleep standing up. wow he is making me a nervous wreck tonight. For some unknown reason he is hanging out on the steps and I keep waiting to hear him come rolling down. I asked him to come down here before he fell and he said " Just play your game on the computer, Im not hurting anyone!" I guess I worry too much but I have seen him fall so many times before. So I guess I should see about having his ammonia levels checked. Tomorrow he has to get MRI and xrays of his back, get a haircut, and see a Pulmonologist. Busy day!!!

That may be too much for him. I'd put off the haircut until another day. Yes, ask his doc about testing for ammonia. They don't do it as part of normal blood work.

If he rolls down the stairs and hurts himself, he may listen to you.

Hi Kath,  it sounds like classic high ammonia levels to me.   Has he had issues with ammonia levels before?......If so it should be part of his blood work each time.   If it is not, request it to be.   Also get the lab to fax you copies of his results too.  I'd get my husband's at work and if they were high I'd call his doctor.

Hi Kathy, I agree with everyone else. It sounds like his ammonia levels. He probably should be taking Lactulose.

Kath, I am hoping by now he has had his ammonia level checked. Sounds like it is elevated. Do you have lactulose at the house??? If not, I would make sure you have plenty on hand. He should be taking it daily. As David mentioned, the xifaxin works well in combination w/ the lactulose, but the xifaxin is a very expensive prescription. If he has not had any lactulose yet, I would definitely start with that, which can be adjusted and you will get the hang of that.

To answer......No he has never had his ammonia levels checked. I am waiting for a call back from his Dr. Looks like I might be calling them on Monday.
We did make it through his back xrays and MRI, haircut and the Pulmonologist too. He is still recovering from all that (Friday). We are both attempting to stop smoking starting Thursday. That should be quite interesting. If he doesnt quit, he will either be on oxygen real soon or he will burn the house down. Im hoping quitting will work out......

I have a couple of questions. First off, do I just keep posting in this thread? And second, What kinds of pain meds are others using? Just curious

Welcome Kath.. usually people keep posting in the same thread... and respond to others as they want...within that thread to that subject... my partner took many different pain killers.... others can tell you specifically....my memory fails me on that subject... welcome...my thoughts and prayers are with you... Actually Kath,  You can keep posting in your original thread if you like , or if it is a completely different subject it's okay to start a new thread.   Some threads get to be so long it gets kind of difficult for someone to read it start to finish.  Once a thread gets to be  3 or more pages long our administrator would like for the moderators to lock the thread and have the member start a new one.  We haven't locked a thread  too often here though.
