MELD SCORE INCREASE EVERY 3 MONTHS?

When we were in Pittsburgh for my husbands evaluation, I aked that specific question and was told that is not true. I was told that they recalculate the score every 3 months, from information from bloodwork done, and they use the higher MELD score, wether it be the previous one (if health has improved), or the new one (if health has worsened). I was told there is no automatic 3 point increase every 3 months.

Does anyone know where to find the documentation of the automatic 3 pt increase?

If they raised my MELD score every 3 months, I would have had a transplant 5 years ago. In 2005, my score was 14. The score was up and down for 4 years, and until June of 2009, never exceeded 18. Then, in a week it jumped 6 points to 24 points. If my score would have been raised every 3 months, it would have been well over 30 points by that time.

Thanks David. I asked at the evaluation was told that is not true, MELD score is changed only by blood work.

My husband's MELD was 15 and the doctor sent a request to the board (Region 3) to set score to 20 (was done). I was told by the doctor that it would automatically increase after 3 mos. He has deteriorated so much that I asked the transplant coordinator when the increase would happen. Was then told that it is NOT automatic (except for cancer?? which his is not) but another letter was sent and his score was approved for 22. I now take all info with "a grain of salt".

Gnet, What was the reason for the request to go from 15 to 20 . . specific health reason? Ammonia? Loss of weight? Ascities? Was it the doctor on the TP team where he is listed? We have a Dr. here in FL and he has a Hepitolgist on the TP team in PA., where we hope to be listed. It's all thru the VA, so they are linked via computer.

Debbie, it could be that it's for those with a liver cancer diagnosis.  David, I know they found a couple of small ones in your old liver AFTER transplant, but not before...so that wouldn't have qualified you.

Connie, Gnet said that they moved him from a 15 to 20 by requesting it, and then from 20 to 22 the same way, and that he is not cancerous. I was just wondering what special circumstances made that occur.

I know that there are certain circumstances whereby a higher rating can be requested, aside from cancer.  David's brain aneurysm was an example of that.  I don't know what the circumstances with Gnet's hubby were, but I'd also be interested to know.
