Spelling, etc.

David, you know I agree.  I want to clarify, however, that those in other countries, with English as a second language, are excluded.  We know that those folks are doing the best they can with a difficult language.

I'm kinda divided on this subject , I agree for the most part . But for me personally it's not medical terminology that's bothersome it is the shorthand form or " texting " that really gets my goat . That mess has sank society to a new low , My mother is a avid reader and I picked up on her love of literature . I saw great beauty in Shakespeare's work in the way he wrote " But that if I was a hand in that glove that I might touch that face " ( Romeo and Juliet ) . What a way to describe how smitten he was .
Today it would be said " She's Hot " . See , Not nearly the same effect . Cheap if you will . You don't have to take up a whole page to describe whats going on but I feel like if your too lazy to attempt making a legible sentence then you probably wont last long in the liver disease area either .
And yes David you are a snotty old expletive . But you didn't need me to confirm that . Still Love ya buddy . Sometimes the tone of our corrections may need to be looked at equally as careful as our urge to correct those who misspell things . Having said that " Wha chall hav fir viddles dis evnen " .

David , I'm not divided on the issue .How can you expect women ,the majority of this site is , who in most cases have had children and then have become a carer to be correct in all their spelling.Surely life's too short to worry about spelling .After all ,this is Healing Well, not Spelling Bee. xoxo Princess

Michael, you don't do yourself justice.

However, I take offense to the excuse you gave for women.  I have a child (grown now) whom I raised alone after age 2, and I've had several careers and numerous jobs.  I've also been ill for at least 18 yrs., caring for myself and my living quarters, cooking, shopping, and cleaning, since there's nobody else to do it.  But I also had a good foundation in English.  My family were all professionals and readers and I've been an avid reader all my life.  I think it makes a huge difference.  You are right...this is not Spelling Bee.com; however, David's point is well taken that in order to communicate it takes a little effort to do so correctly.  I don't think you personally have a problem.  But lots of others do.  I think it's most important to be able to spell diseases and symptoms correctly, as well as medications, as this is mandatory to communicate with doctors well..and will also gain their respect.

Connie-when husband and I see his GI, I have always asked him about the correct pronunciation of medical terms related to liver disease. He knows that we are trying to educate ourselves about husband's condition as well as let him have the lead and the opportunity to be our teacher. I think this has helped with our doctor/patient/spouse relationship.

People come here looking for answers to extremely hard questions. Some may be here a while, some only for a short time. The last thing they should be called out on is their prowess with the English language. Any other forum (e.g. something sports related) I'd agree with you; but not this forum, or others dealing with similar subject matter. As if the visitors/posters don't have enough to worry about. You have no idea if the other person typing is asking/saying something nonchalantly, or is trying to sop up the tears between keystrokes. If you need clarification on something, the answer is simple. Ask. Don't turn into the grammar police.

I've been watching this forum (lurker) since early 2k8 shortly before my father passed due to cirrhosis. My mom (step...or "bonus") is currently in her very last days (literally 2 or 3 at most) due to the same darn (didn't type darn...) disease... no eating/drinking, can't communicate, can't swallow, no urination, extremely jaundiced, you name it...it's that close. Started a month ago, went to hospital, then hospice, then rehab, then hospital then hospice again....just waiting for the end. In the mean time, My mom ("biological") just started showing some 'odd' signs, that has me worried.... She is an extremely heavy drinker as well.

I'm already pissed.

The 'regulars' need to realize people first find this site by simply googling 'cirrhosis forums' when looking for someone to talk to who might be dealing with this same disease (thats how i found it). Maybe it'll be ok, maybe not. Either way, they're distressed... They need help. No need to prejudge (other threads), or (as far as this thread suggests) make grammar a prereq.

I told myself I wasn't gonna get involved in this one but you guy's know what a sucker for a ruckus I am .
It's the " Delivery " that's the problem here . Most of the regulars know how anal some of our members can be about particular things , Myself not excluded . The way the message is being delivered to the newer members can be misconstrued as being demeaning to some and for me it was much the same way when I joined here years ago . I personally laugh it off and even taunt the ones who it seems to bother most . When I look at other forums that are Non health related with posters that are highly educated ( or seem to be ) , I still see some typo's or bad punctuation . It doesn't bother me because the message is still conveyed , It just wasn't edited properly . I shudder to think of our every word being scrutinized by a grade school teacher , Particularly with my upbringing . My backside would never turn pasty white again .
A simple but unobtrusive " The word is ________ and check out the medical terms thread if you need the correct spelling " will do . The phrase " Read it prior to posting " should work both ways . Ask yourself if the way you typed the message to correct someone gonna have a positive or negative effect . And if anybody's " pissed " on either side of this issue , Well just ask yourself " Is the spelling of a word worth how many seconds of your life spent frivolously bickering about it " . In closing , It's all about delivery .
