Northernlights,
I'm from Canada (Montreal) but have lived in the States since '94. Where are you?
So which meds are you on? How advanced is the cirrhosis, did they say? Someone at work recently donated part of his liver to his brother with PBC (his brother is in Ontario). A lady on one of my other groups just had a live liver donation from her sister. So live liver is definitely an option.
For diet...a healthy diet, just like anyone else SHOULD be doing Lots of fresh fruits and veg. Since you have cirrhosis, NO red meat. Chicken, pork, tofu...are fine. You need protein but don't over indulge as it is more difficult to digest. Low fat diet as well. Fat is essential but when found in healthy fats like nuts, avocado, fish and plant oils. Greasy fat foods will be harder because of the amount of bile needed to digest. And of course, NO alcohol!! Also, low salt because of the fluid retention.
You should be on a good multi-vitamin as well. When you do get in to see the doc again, ask about a bone density scan (Dexa-scan) for baseline. Prednisone (I'm sure you're on) causes bone thinning. So you should also ask about taking extra calcium. All the AIHers I know are on calcium and Vit D supplements. Also, because of the pred, you should take a proton pump inhibitor (something like prevacid, omeprazole/Prilosec, Aciphex...) not Tums or antacid...those stop acid after the fact. It'll protect your stomach lining.
