My husbands kidneys failed a few weeks before transplant . When someone gets really bad they don't really want to take the risk of a transplant not being sucessfull and their track record looking bad . I'm amazed that they gave my husband one as bad off as he was , I was preparing myself for the worst . But being that he was so young and had survived so many episodes they said he wouldn't and I was always there everyday ...asking questions ...recording labs and really wanting the translant .you are your friends best advcate .....they always say the squeaky wheel ...gets oiled ..its true .....stay on top of things and come here often as its great for information and support ..it was a lifesaver in our crisis ....my husband had a meld of .39 . He was transplanted on Sept 27 ....its still a battle ..but everyday gets better !!!

PSP, welcome to the forum! I agree with the others--seek a second opinion. Sometimes a patient will get both a kidney and liver transplant. Or there may be a center that thinks transplant is still possible. A TIPS (Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt) procedure is sometimes done if fluid keeps coming back after tapping. It carries risks, but works well in most cases. There are members here who have had it with good results.

Your relative can be listed at more than one center. He or his caregiver need to check it out.

It sounds like what we are going through, my husband received his transplant on Oct 31. Very very sick before transplant, kidneys an issue before transplant but no dialysis, then after transplant renal failure. He was so sick before that he was and still is very weak, has to go to dialysis 3x per week, hoping for kidneys to come back, creatinine was 4.6, then 4,0, then 3.6 and is stuck there (for 2 weeks) at 3.6. He is weak and has lost so much weight, and hates dialysis and is depressed. He got sick very suddenly (really sick, he has been ill for years but worked until August) and it is veery hard. Doeas anyone have any good stories about kidneys coming back ? He is at home, has been home about 3 weeks, was in hospital a month before transplant, so was in hospital for 2.5 months. He is doing ok but I worry so about the dialysis.

Roll tide ..our kidney and liver doc said give it 6 months after transplant...sometimes they come back ...my husband does urinate every so often ....the dialysis treatments and the running of appt can be depressing ..I try to stay positive...in hopes it will rub off on my husband ...it usually works ..... You can also train and do home dialysis or pernatneal diaysis and there are some places that do night time .....we saw and talk to a man who does nighttime dialysis and loves it ...he said when he's finishes he goes home and sleeps the rest of the night .....he said before he did daytime and took everything out of him ....maybe this is a option for you and hubby ...I have children so its just not practical for us ..I wish it was ...I'm sure you are like me and have to drive him to appt ect .....if in a few months his kidneys do not come back we will star looking into kidney transplant.......hope things get better

My husband had appt with transplant dr today. Dr.'s are very pleased with progress, said his liver numbers were better than theirs! Creatinie is 3.3 now, so it is creeping downward. He seems a little better now after seeing creatinine going down again. He does urinate, has been for a couple of weeks now, so I guess that is encouraging. Yes Blonde, I do drive him to most appts. I have kept my job because I now carry our insurance, we have family that can help and are 30 minutes away from transplant ctr so I guess I should stop whining. I think poor me and then get on here and realize that I am fortunate, so many dont have family to help, etc. But I did tell my sister half joking that if he ever needs another liver transplant I will cvall him a cab! It is amazing how you can be so down one day and the next hopeful. I have to keep reminding both of us that it is a miracle that he is here, and recovery takes time.

Yep its good to stay positiv..even when your world is turned upside down ....I have to everything ....but my parents help out with the kids when I need it ..so I'm fortunate for that :)
