My brother is living at my sisters house and she is his caregiver. She took him to the hospital today to get drained ( ascites) and will be bringing him home after the process is complete. She went out last week and I went over and spent some time with him which was nice. He seems to be doing ok. He was denied ssi because he always was on assistance, worked under the table, etc....the alcoholic lifestyle....(one of them anyway!!) and now sis is just searching for a couple W2 forms where my brother was "on the books" to resubmit. Thank God he can get his medical treatment through VA as well as medical assistance. I haven't posted for awhile so here it is. One of my sisters that has had breast cancer just found out she now has bone cancer and it has spread through her body so we are waiting on tests results for her as well. Oh these diseases suck!!

yes my sister is something else. she is taking care of everything. Us others are there if she should need any help but she is such a go getter, she has everything under control - always. I am so glad he is living with her for now. That is the best option for him. She is something else!!

Kelly, I can only echo what others have said. However, SSI is not based on wages or money paid into SS. It is for those who don't have enough work credits to qualify for SSD or for those whose disability is not permanent, but will last at least a year. They almost always turn applicants down the first time, so he should definitely appeal.
I am very sorry about
your sister. My grandson died at 24 from metastatic bone cancer. I hope your sister fares better.
Hugs,
Connie

so with the additional w2's , it may give him enough credits to qualify. I am sorry I am not familiar with the ss system.

Kelly, if he worked "on the books;" i.e., paying into SS, he would not need W2s. The SS dept. has how much he earned and how much was paid into SS) in their system. As previously stated, if he doesn't have enough work credits on the books (which amounts to 10 yrs. of FT work, paying into SS) he would be eligible for SSI and Medicaid, but not SSD and Medicare.
Hugs,
Connie
