My mom is lucky that her VA insurance pays for Xifaxan 100%!!!!!!

And let me tell you what.......Xifaxan is a miracle drug! From where she was the few days before she started it to where she was three days later was literally life and death.

Have any of you had side effects from it? My mom said she is itchy, and mostly in her 'private' areas. THis happen to anyone?

Sara, Mike did really well on the Xifaxan, it saved ME from doing him in some days! Poor guy was a mess. They started it in the hospital at one point and I couldn't believe the difference. That and having all that Albumen and other stuff to balance his electrolites, etc. He'd go in the hospital for 5 days and them come home for 3 or 4 weeks before he got all messed up again. Once they got his lasix and xifaxan organized, I had him home for several months in a row!

I think being itchy is part of the liver disease. Mike started wiht that amost 10 years ago, after his Interferon treatment. (Which failed.)

They said it was bile salts building up and they gave him Cholestyramine...a powder like Tang that you mix with water. He didn't love the taste but is a good sport and it stopped the itchies. Others here use Gold Bond lotion for itchies.

Sara, that is fantastic! Yay for the VA!

I never had much itching before or after transplant, but now I am. I can only think it might be related to the Keflex antibiotic they put me on 4 x a day...or dry skin. When the itching is on one spot for long, I use OTC hydrocortisone 1% cream.
