Went to see the live doctor and she thinks my mom has Wernicke's encephalopathy. She will know more after they do an MRI of her liver. They are also going to do some type of brain scan which will take four hours. I am not sure of the name. So we sit and wait.

The live doctor? As opposed to the dead one?
Sorry, I couldn't let that one pass.
Is it a PET scan that she is having? Do let us know the results.

Connie

Thanks for the laugh. I needed it.
Not sure if it's a PET scan but I don't think so. She is getting her MRI on Wednesday.

The only news right now is that she is vitamin A deficient. Still waiting for the MRI results. I'm praying that her liver is okay but that thinking what hell would cause her HE levels. I don't know what to pray for right now.

Mom got her MRI of her Liver back and they said it is fine. No scaring, smooth and no problems. She is going to go back into the hospital tomorrow for another round of test to see if they can find out anymore.
I think I am relieved they said her Liver is ok but afraid of what could be wrong. I'm going to stay positive for now.

After talking to her doctor my mom is heading back to the hospital today. They are doing another round of test to try and determine what is going on.

Moms ammonia levels are down. They are doing a DaTSCAN on her today. I'm pretty sure they have no clue what is going on with her. They are saying after having the MRI of her liver done that it looks fine.
More tests and they still don't know what's going on.

DaTSCAN is the contrast medium that will allow very detailed visualization of the brain. It is used to diagnose Parkinson's and other movement disorders.
I agree that they don't know what is going on and are therefore just ruling out various possibilities.

I was reading my mother's discharge papers over the weekend and something didn't look right to me. Now remember they told us her liver looked find last week. Listed under tests was RUQ Ultra Sound with the following remarks: Hepatic surface nodularity in keeping with cirrhosis. No other abnormality. Nodularity more prominent than prior study on 3/30. Her liver function test results are as follows: protein 7.1, albumin 3.1, total bili 1.6, direct bili 0.9, alkP 251, AST 110, ALT 67, INR 1.32.
Can someone who knows what I am looking help me decipher what this means? From my limited knowledge it looks like she does have cirrhosis.

Well, it does sound like she has cirrhosis. And her enzymes are elevated.

That is what I got from those results. She goes back in on Thursday for a follow up and I will make sure these results are discussed.
From what you know about
the test results how bad does her results look?

They're not exceedingly high, but certainly out of range. Normal values that I have available are AST 8-43, ALT 7-45, Alk phos 55-142, INR 0.8-1.1, bili total 0.1-1.1, bili direct 0.0-0.3. I know that my protein runs low at 9. I think low normal is 10. Of course, the best diagnostic tool is a liver biopsy.

Thank you. I didn't have something to compare it to. I am going to suggest a biopsy.

Bad Summer
Did they give you her creatinine lab result.
If so, you can calculate her MELD score and that will give you some indication of how sick she is, liver wise.

Here's a link to a calculator that will show her MELD score:
http://www.mayoclinic.org/meld/mayomodel6.html
You will need her creatinine, INR, and bilirubin.

Hi ladies, no I don't have her creatinine results. I was looking over the papers yesterday and did not see it. I am going to have my stepfather ask the doctor about
that on Thursday when my mom goes back for a follow-up visit.
This is very frustrating. I do not understand how they can say her liver is fine and then put those remarks in her test results. They said her blood work is elevated but that is to be expected for someone with Hep C.

Creatinine level should be done as a matter of course for someone with liver disease. It is usually done at the same time other labs are being drawn.
It's true that hep C will elevate the liver enzymes. Mine is loving my new liver and my enzymes, BUN, etc., are all higher than they were before transplant. By all means, have your stepdad inquire about
this on Thurs.
Hugs,
Connie
