@Pam,
I am sorrry to hear that your husband is facing the end of the line, but I feel glad you have turned to Hospice and your friends to help you through these tough times. And the folks on this forum can be a HUGE support, as they are to me all the time. I can't imagine how you are working full time through this. Hats off to you. While we have the Family and Medical Leave Act to help our loved ones during tough times, it isn't a paid program so it is hard to take the time off even when the manager can't fire you for doing so.
I will add something to your post in addition to being supportive about
this sad situation.
My partner, Mike, who I write about
all the time, also has a valve problem. He has aortic stenosis and will need a valve replacement at some point. Mike was strong enough that the cardiologist approved him for transplant, because without transplant in May 2011, he would have died very shortly.
However, that valve problem chugs along. He cardiologist sees him every 4 months. At the lat visit he told us about
a new procedure where they can replace the valve through a small incision in the leg and run the valve up through the artery to the heart and do the whole surgery using the same path as they do for a cardiac catheterization.
http://my.clevelandclinic.org/heart/percutaneous/percutaneousvalve.aspxThis is not a perfect procedure and they are only doing it on patients who are quite elderly or who are not candidates for traditional surgery because of other underlying medical conditions.
The procedure is getting safer all the time and the cardiologist hopes that Mike's symptoms (shortness of breath, fluid build up, etc) hold off for a while. BUT, if he were to need surgery any time soon, they have recommended this procedure.
I am sure our doc wants their statistics to have a high successful outcome % and would not do it if all was lost anyway.
But it keeps me positive that there is a game plan for that eventuality.
Mike sees a cardiologist at UMiami/ Miller School of Medicine although the article I found was for the Cleveland Clinic.
