Great news everyone, hubby got the call yesterday around 8 pm!! They went out did a visual and did all of their examinations. He has a good low risk liver!!! He was brought back around 7AM to begin surgery. Please keep him in your prayers. I am really ecstatic!!

Thanks so much for all of your advice, prayers, and just being a listening ear.

Here we are...hoping for news along the way. Where are they having you wait? Will they update you during the surgery? I'm so glad he got the call. Praying...Hugs, Carol

Hallelujah! Wonderful news!! Keep us updated, as you are able. If the Prednisone keeps him awake post-transplant, have him ask for something to allow him to sleep. They finally gave me Ativan, I think, after 5 days of very little sleep and nonstop talking.

All is going well. Old liver has been removed and new liver is being transplanted as I type. I want to thank y'all so much for helping me through this rough time in my life. Your kind words have kept me sane. I feel like we are family even though we haven't met. You guys give unselfishly to others who are in need. If you have never been told you guys are a life saver!

What is your husband's name Dabess? Or a nick to call him on here. Holding your hand today from Phoenix. My husband, themister, asked if we heard anything yet. Can't wait to give him the updates! You hang in there. This is going very well. Hug. hugs, hugs...themiz

Did they give you an estimate of how long surgery would take? Mine ran about 6 hrs., as they found the hepatic artery was shot and they had to build a new one. I hope his TP goes smoothly and quickly! I'm sure you know he will go to ICU after Recovery, so they can keep a really close eye on him. The alarms going off constantly about drove me nuts.

Oh Tasha, I am SO happy for you guys! See, I told you there was just one more thing on the list - and here it is! Also, it's great that they have given you an update during the surgery - I didn't get a single one during Robert's and I was going NUTS!

A little advice. It takes awhile once they get him to the ICU after surgery, before you'll be able to see him (the nurses have to do all of their 'to-do list' and it may take an hour or so), so ask them if you can see your hubby while he's 'in transit'. They let me know when they were about to wheel Robert out and I was able to run up there and spend a couple of minutes with him - and that helped me a LOT!

Just remember that he's going to look a little 'bad' fresh out of the OR. Robert still had his eyes taped, there were tubes and wires coming out of/off what seemed like everywhere on his body - it was kind of scary. Your emotions will be all over the place and you'll probably cry. Just wanted to explain that a bit so you are not surprised or shocked by the way your hubby looks. In some ways, he may look better - like if his skin was yellow before, that will probably look better. And even though he might still be 'out' - talk to him softly anyway.

Ok, I'm just trying to think of anything that may help in these early hours!

Okay, Hubby came out great!! He was still out of it but dr sd the blood started flowing good through the liver. They are watching him just in case they have to go back in cause of clotting. He had to get 15 pints of blood, and his hemoglobin out of surgery was 7 so they plan on giving him more blood.

Splashdancer, yeah he looked out of it, but I was prepared as I seen my dad straight out of triple bypass surgery. So I held it together. He was able to look my direction when he heard my voice. I was so full and I'm so grateful to God for his second chance at life.

Hep93, yea they were all moving fast, but our warnings helped when I went in to see him. I was so jumpy as I knew it was protocol.

Themiz, pls tell Themister hubby is good!! He looked good even through the tubes, I guess that's my love for him kicking in, lol. Also, drs said his bowel resection surgery was botched and caused all of his liver damage, as when the previous dr stitched him bk up they crammed all his intestines and liver into that small spot. Which cause the scar tissue to damage the liver. My poor baby, all of this from a quack dr. But the drinking didn't help the damage. That is my story to him and I'm sticking with it, lol... His name is Ray.

I am so thankful words can't explain. I am sure recovery will be rough but I'm glad the surgery is complete.

Oh yeah, as they were wheeling him to OR the surgeon told me his MELD score was over 40! Wow, I was in complete shock as to his survival... God is good!

Just got a call from dr they are taking hubby back to find where he is having abdominal bleeding. As his vitals are stable, but his hemoglobin is low. The drs say this is common after transplant and that is why they didnt stitch him up after surgery. Due to him getting numerous transfusions pre-transplant. Is this common? Has any of you experienced this?

No, I didn't...though I did get 2 units of blood after transplant, but before I woke up...and another one, I think, in ICU. My RBC was low and has been ever since transplant, but they don't want me to take iron supplements.

After my transplant, the new liver didn't start working, so after 13 hours, they opened me back up. Everything looked fine and a few hours later, the liver kicked in. Not the same as your husband, but it's not uncommon for there to be glitches after a major operation.

Very good news, Tasha! It sounds like Ray got his transplant just in time. A MELD of 40+ is HIGH! I hope he continues to do well. You must be exhausted. Get some sleep!!!
