mouth cancer and drinking

Mark had a Dr appt today,just the usual checkup kinda thing. He has a big and when I say big,I mean a mole that takes up his whole inner ear up! A yr ago he had a bioscopy on it and it came back ok,but now it has come back with a vengeance.
As we were talking about his ear,she asked how his mouth was because in 2010 he was diagnosed with mouth cancer,and I should add,,not from smoking,it was from Drinking ! He had the cancer removed from his tongue and floor of his mouth,no chemo or anything,told that he would be ok . No one ever told us that it could come back again.When Dr looked into his mouth she got really flustered and said its BACK !

So now we are waiting on an Appt with an ENT who also specializes in Mouth cancer.

She said his blood counts look ok,except for his Platelets which are 61 and his WBC and RBC are down but not enough to worry about at this point. Oh and his Albumin which is not good and why he takes a water pill daily !
So now not only has his drinking cause Cirrhosis,but now we can add the cancer to it also !

I really wish Mark cared about his liver as much as I have!

Sorry, Robin, but this may just give Mark another excuse to drink. However...sometimes a stray cancer cell or two is missed, so it grows again. He should've been checked yearly. The usual treatment after surgery is radiation, but it does burn the oral mucosa badly. I had a friend who had throat cancer and had radiation after surgery. He couldn't swallow and had to have a feeding tube for a very long time...both during treatment and for months afterwards. So it's understandable that the doctor didn't go the radiation route the first time, if she thought she got it all.

I know you think you need to stand by him and support him through this. But think of why he's in this position in the first place. Personally, I'd be really angry. This cancer could spread to his throat or brain. You are right...he needs to care about his health at least as much as you do. And he doesn't. Your move.

How is Mark feeling today? Has he gotten over the shock of this new problem in his mouth?

I'm fine Robin Ty and I can't believe he has to wait til September! Can you try and get on a cancellation list?

I would call twice a week and keep bugging them til they do. But then I've been called a pest quite a few times :)

I was planning on calling today to be put on the call off list but I forgot ! Mark has lost alot of his hearing,most of it is gone in his left ear,Dr says its from the Cirrhosis (does it really cause so many problems?),anyways,this Dr can take care of that,do a biopsy on his ear and his mouth and also specializes in mouth cancer,so it was pretty hard to even get into this Dr that soon !

And just out of curious,can you still be qualified for a TP if you have cancer in another part of your body ? He has Carcinoma on his tongue and mouth floor.

Lasix is also ototoxic - I.e. it can damage the ears. If that is the water pill he's on, it may be a contributing factor, although I believe it's uncommon

Glad you are back,but so sorry you haven't been feeling good ! Please make sure Dr knows what your platelet count is before the biopsy is done,the mouth tends to bleed out good. Hope you get good news on your tests !
