Hi all,

I wondered if a thread has ever been started for us liver guys to post our latest lab (blood) results for discussion and comparison? I'm happy to throw mine into the ring - so here goes:

Anyone notice anything off? Other than the bili being a bit high?

I am not too up to speed on the non liver readings but apart from the bili (my lab's normal range is 5 - 17 for example so 28 would be a little raised by that standard) my only observation would be that the AFP at 12 is very slightly above the max of the range (10) at my lab. But different labs have different ranges so it may be fine.

PS We use a different measure for bilirubin here in UK than in the US so I know it may look very high if you are used to a different scale!

I think the UK labs are slightly different from US ones. What is ALB? And is CCA some form of calcium? If CRE is creatinine, that is way over the norm in the US, where the high end of normal is 1.1. The high end of AFP is 5.9, in which case yours would be elevated. Mine, with hep C, was 17 on July 1st.

So yes, it makes it difficult to interpret. So I will just leave it to the UKers who are more familiar with the scales used over there.

Hi Connie,

The CRE is indeed Creatinine, but in the uk is given in mmol/l rather than, I think, mg/l. So a level of 60 here is equivalent to 0.6 there. I think CCA is Calcium bicarbonate. I think the AFP is given in nanogram/ml, and the high end is 10, so this is slightly elevated.

Bilirubin - to get UK to US, you divide by 10 and halve I believe. So, 28 = 1.4.

You are right about the two creatine measures. I looked it up on the Mayo clinic site and that had both ways of measuring.

I do get confused when some use different measures but other like ALT, GGT etc are the same in both countries!

         hey Jamie,,   i like your idea.  other websites that offer spread sheets for treating folks are becoming very popular.  i am on one spread sheet that documents all V/Ls and out of range bloods and serious side effects.  makes things interesting when treating

          as far as your bloodwork is concerned,   my immediate concern would be your CBC.    is hb your hemoglobin..   are you cirrhotic?   everything is low.    your wbc is borderline.

           wbc    443.           441

             hgb   12.1           14-18\

            plt     108             150-400

         

           your platelets are low enough, that i would stay away from nsaids, and anything that thins blood.

one other thing Jamie, on your cbc, is your neutrophil(neut) count fall in the normal range? your neuts are the percentage of wbc that fights bacterial occurances. i can go to a ANC calculator if you dont have it. barry

Hi Barry,

Yes, cirrhotic through alcohol abuse (now abstinent) with left lobe atrophy and compensatory right lobe hypertrophy.

My Hb has been low ever since having had a variceal bleed. I was transfused to bring my Hb back up to approx 9 but until the propranolol had been given time to work, they did not want to overtransfuse me and increase the likelihood of haemorrhage. Since 7th June, I have been clear of varices, and had only very mild portal hypertensive gastropathy. The Hb has been steadily on the increase since the bleed, in February.

My platelets are unusually low this time. Last time they were approx. 170. I am on Omeprazole, which can affect them and I also have splenomegaly, which, again can affect them.

My neutrophil count is at the lower end of the normal range. I think.

I stay away from NSAIDs as a matter of course.

Nicechaplondon, I'm on par with this thread and the idea of sharing some knowledge based with others. I don't necessarily think the lab result constitute a degree of disease but should reflect to certain extend where people can share their inputs from previous experience.

DP, Did you say they did Hep testing for all virus types?

I am on the road with family and mostly checking on phone...hard to do research.

Folks with serious liver disease often have really high AST/ALTs...in the hundreds.

yes, they did do hep test and I was told to get Hep A vaccination which I did in April and waiting for followup in october as I was told it's usually given after 6 month.

Other then that... everything looks normal besides my mild discomfort on my RUQ. hehe

All fine here! I think baby George is fine! I'm not the biggest royalist in the world, but I was amused when they showed on the news that the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William had been to register the birth and that on the form under 'occupation', Kate had written 'Princess of the United Kingdom!'.

i have been trying to find more information about the compensatory hypertrophy that I have in one lobe, owing to the atrophy in another. Do you know much about this?

Thanks for the abbreviation info.

Regarding compensation, I can only tell you that when my rt. lobe was removed when I had the first (huge) HCC, the left lobe grew to the size of the former rt. lobe, to compensate. I told this story in my blog, but it's worth retelling:

When I was having an abdominal CT some months after the rt. lobe removal, the fairly new radiologist kept going over and over one spot. I asked if he saw something. He just said he was going to bring in his "boss," a senior radiologist. The older doc looked at it and asked Jr. what happens when one lobe is removed. Jr. stood there speechless. I automatically piped up and said, "The other one grows!" He said that was correct...the other lobe grows to compensate. Jr. was red-faced. He thought what he was seeing was another tumor! And that did happen later, but diagnosed by MRI and I didn't feel it, as I did with the larger left lobe.
