This is now my favorite thread this week...it makes me weep to think that there is actually HOPE on the horizon..."CLEAR" IS A WORD I NEVER THOUGHT WE MIGHT HEAR.

thanks so much, I had such a rough time on Interferon, I can't believe I might not have to suffer again that way. Can't believe also that after 35 years it might be possible to shift it - seems like a dream! For all of us. And new lives at last maybe. Great to be able to talk on forum, don't even want to mention it to family yet, just in case (and as you guys know, it's only those who have it who can really understand). So happy for you EzAL. I can't imagine alcohol use would be a good idea

Not everyone who drinks alcohol becomes cirrhotic. But those who have that tendency why would they not again???

I can't wrap my head around this

I certainly would not think someone who used drugs or alcohol to excess would be different another phase of their life

I was never cirrhotic, if I still had damage I would not drink wine. When the top liver Doctor at UCLA says I see no problem with you drinking socially and leading a normal life, I tend to believe him. Last ultrasound, normal, last biopsy, normal. No virus in my body. The new drugs from Gilead kill the virus completely, not just a remission like the old standard of care. The only way it could come back is if I were reinfected.

I was stage 3 after Telepavir and when I started the trial with Gilead I was stage 2.Now I'm stage 0 

At some point you must live life, and not let life rob you of enjoyment.

Is this trial only for people with hep c? Can people with cirrhosis benefit from this new drug? I.e. alcoholic cirrhosis and fatty liver progressed to cirrhosis patients?

EzAl, I have to side with Carol on the drinking. To me, why take a chance? Even if I cleared the virus, I could not imagine drinking again. Maybe a glass of champagne on my death bed. I don't necessarily agree with everything my doctor says.

If you feel okay with it, that's your personal decision. You have not had a problem with alcoholism or ALD...GREAT! But I think it sends the wrong message to those who are struggling with these very things. They may translate it to "So I can clear the virus and drink again."

As I said, it's your personal choice, but I don't know that I'd be advertising it on a public forum of this sort. Instead, talk about all the other things in your life that you can now do with your renewed energy. Now can we drop the subject?

       @Zoarie  i have a friend on a different forum who has hep c, cirrhosis, and hcc, and if he can get his afp under 500 will be transplanted.  he has been on sofosbuvir and ribavirin for almost a year, and has been undetectable since week 2 of tx.  the strategy is to stay und, going into transplant.  gilead is doing a number of compassionate trials to help patients with limited options. on 11/14 maybe you can ask your doc to contact gilead about your personal case.  best

BTW,I was never a drug user or an alcoholic. I got Hep C from a transfusion back in the late 80's.I won a case against St. Josephs Hospital in 1993 when I was diagnosed.

I never had Cirrhosis, had Hep C and was cured early this year. My biopsy and ultrasound show no damage to my liver. I was at stage 2 prior to TX.

Hell I remember those guys, we use to hang out at Oki dogs and some other joint on La Cieniga near Alta Dena dairy

i wasnt close friends with them, they were closer to a friend of mine, and we all hung out for a few years. they transferred to hamilton for a year and hung at shakeys on fairfax and san vicente. havent seen any of them since graduation. small world

they started testing in late 91 for hep c.I had a great attorney and they settled within 8 months. There were 7 other cases involving St. Josephs going on at the same time and I deposed all of them. BTW, I'm an attorney as well, If you need a divorce ,let me know.

I was diagnosed in Nov 91 and was able to pin point where it came from.
