i was dx in 92 by accident. went to dr for physical to become foster parent and voila!!

Why would people who do not have liver damage and whose disease has nothing to do with alcoholism or cirrhosis, need to swear off alcohol? Either you're an alcoholic or you're not. Either your liver is damaged or it isn't. My doctor told me there was nothing wrong with social drinking as it has nothing to do with my condition and my liver is not damaged.


As to the main topic of this thread, I think it's fantastic and I wonder if this isn't the drug a guy I know from SF was talking about. His father had hep c for 30 years and was virus free within a week of tx. In any event it is extremely encouraging.

I have been (and remain) undetectable since 20 days of starting the triple tx. My doctor also told me that if I remain that way for either 6 months or a year ( I can't remember) after the end of tx, I will be considered cured. Not in SVR, but cured. Hep is pretty much all this guy has ever done with his career and I trust him.

Anyway, congrats to the OP and with any luck this will be the beginning of the end for this disease.

connie, my wife and i took classes to deal with drug addicted babies at birth. we took care of a number of crack babies and adopted 2 from birth. what a story!!

I could not agree with you more. I was on Sofosbuvir/ledipasvir and was undetectable after 7 days. And you're right, on the new drugs it is considered a cure, not SVR. Cured since May 2013.LIVER DAMAGE IS GONE.
Understand though it's difficult for people to wrap their head around this, it's too new. Also most people here have more serious problems than you and I.

Be compassionate to others, they are going through hell.

These people have shown great compassion to me and I would never dream of showing them anything less. I hope my post didn't come off that way. Obviously, this being a forum devoted to liver issues, most people are going to want to avoid alcohol. I'm just saying that if it isn't a problem, it isn't a problem.

Def, you're right. And, as I said, it's a personal choice for those who are disease free and get their doctor's okay. For those of us with a hx of alcoholism or currently struggling with it, it's a definite NO, not a "maybe."

Barry, that's awesome!

Yes, I occasionally think a glass of wine would be nice with a good meal. However, after 27 yrs. of sobriety...even if I cleared the virus and my liver were as good as new again...I'd probably have the world's worst hangover on one glass. Not to mention, it could well take me spiraling down once again. I have an addictive personality and for now I leave it to ice cream.

Thanks, Def. All those 23-hours a day really add up. I crave a cigarette pretty strongly now and then...it's only been 11 years nicotine free. Good thing I have a short attention span, as my mind jumps onto something else within a minute.

try the vaporizer. I haven't smoked a cigarette in over 3 years.nicotine is not that harmful in fact it's no more harmful than caffeineyou can get them and any vapor shop, the hottest thing right nowit's the smoke and all the chemicals in a cigarette that are harmful to you vaporizer is not very armful at all .they are smoke-free and chemical free, in fact you can get them from 0 nicotine.

EzAl, sorry, but I'm not getting e-cigs or any other thing that I would remind me of an addictive substance that I had a hard time giving up, whether this actually is or not. Obviously, you do not have an addictive personality and don't have a clue where I'm coming from.

When I quit smoking, it was actually because I didn't want to be addicted to anything. I'm a recovered drug addict (since late 60s), sober alcoholic (27 yrs.), and nicotine free for 11 yrs. I've had a transplant and nothing but major medical problems ever since. I'm just trying to stay alive right now...not looking for things that may jeopardize whatever life I have left. This is not reflective of everyone on this forum, but it certainly is true of me.

I did have an addictive personality and it was women. Now I just go out with them as friends and don't get too involved, so I'm cured of that too.

I didn't know you were in such distress, sorry if I offended you, it was not my intention. I hope you get cure soon and have a long life ahead of you.

Nicotine is extremely addictive. It isn't good for you. At one time nicotine (actually it was tobacco powder) was used as an organic insecticide, but now it's deemed too toxic for that purpose. Vaporizing straight nicotine is very potent, much more so than a cigarette.

Update...saw my lovely consultant today, and of course things are complicated. Seems that he, along with other top docs worldwide are trying to force Gilead to allow them to prescribe to people like us ahead of official release of drugs, also trying to get uk gov. to stump up money to cover these tx's. I might be able to be treated with sofa and RIBA in April May, and conceivably sofa/lepi in June, but all the trials are full now here in uk for lepi. I am disappointed, had a weep, but now looking ahead to possible good news in the spring. Basically I am not nearly sick enough for compassionate grounds, and Gilead is being very, very limited with their release of any thing, greedy ******s. Good news is that by 2015 we should all have access to sofa/lepi, and then it is just down to money. Ain't it always. Michaela, I know you're disappointed, but hopefully it won't be long before the new treatment is available to you.

The good news is that you aren't "that sick." I am. My name has been submitted for the trial and I hope to find out something later this month. I am absolutely desperate for this treatment, before my new liver fails me.

EZAl - This is great news to hear! Also, is this the same combination that Gilead is talking about with the cure for HepB? I thought I heard they have come up with something..

You are quite right Connie, of course. It is just so frustrating that it is so near and yet so far, and it seems so short sighted to wait until I am really sick when they have the means now. I wish you get on tx as soon as humanly possible and get CLEAR and free and get your life back. Thinking of you and wishing you all the best. xx

Luckyman,I believe these are the drugs from Gilead that your talking about. They are in very early stage. You should be vaccinated for hep b in fact everyone should be.

EzAl, I do not know HOW I contracted Hep B. I never had it before and then all of the sudden a routine blood test in July revealed it. I have my suspicions, which include dirty dentist needle, barber razor, bad needle from allergy testing.. and Connie mentioned even sharing drinks with friends (though as far as I know, no friends have it).
