Sadtimes, Welcome to the Healing Well hepatitis forum. Folks here are patients and loved ones of those affected by various liver diseases.
Like you, my partner was a drinking man...until he got too sick to drink much of anything. He also had/has Hep C and had liver cancer before his transplant.
Looking back, I know that he had this Hepatic Encephalopathy on and off for a long time, but I didn't know anything about it until this forum.
We had the crankies here too...Mr. Grumpy Pants I called him. And he was cantankerous also...mean really.
I have told my story many times, but after his transplant we discovered that he has amnesia about all events during periods of HE.
Last week he had shoulder surgery....so anesthesia and a bunch of morphine and other pain stuff. And he was grumpy, mean and confused. It brought me back to the bad old days when he had me so upset.
I eventually learned that it is part of the disease (not a very nice part indeed) and they don't mean it...will forget everything they did or said under the severe influence of HE.
Mae is right...no guns...take over the meds...and keep the kids safe. He doesn't mean it unless he was a son of a guy before.
He may be sicker than his docs say.
Mike's doc told him in 2003 that if he stayed sober with cirrhosis, he could have 15 good years before he 's be looking for a liver transplant. And he got better for a while.
And then he started with the cocktails again and he was at death's door in way less than 15 years! He was in liver failure in 2009, got sober in 2010 and had a successful transplant in 2011. The in between time was AWFUL. Sorry. AWFUL.
By some of the words and phrases you use I am assuming you live in the UK or Australia. The system may be different there. But I would make sure you know where the best hepatology/transplant program is in your area and find some way to get a referral there for a consultation....with the notion that you may need their help in time.
Let us know how he is doing, and there are other caregivers here who have seen it all! We will try to help with information and support.
There are some good websites described in the RESOURCES thread at the top of this forum.
Best to your family,
Mama Lama from Florida
