Hi its Caregiver Butterfly422,

Hubby was seen at least 3 weeks ago for upper abd pain and had blood work and ultrasound done. We were told by the doc nurse all seem ok nothing unusual that needed immediate attention. Today the Doctor calls over the same tests and has concerns about the blood work... AFP going from 20 to in the 40's. After reading about it , this is to be expected with HepC ESLD but the numbers are in the 100's so I am curious about the doctors need to call instead of the nurse and the sense of urgency behind this oversight which appears not so big or IS IT?

Any thoughts...? Keep in mind he is swelling and in pain in the right abdom area below the rib cage area..

A high AFP can indicate The presence of liver cancer. At my lab, anything under 10, was normal. don't know about yours...

interestingly! my AFP was always under 10, but I had a lesion that grew and was turning cancerous at the time of my tx.

Mike's AFP began to rise and his Hep doc was not a bit surprised when the tumor made itself known 2.5 months before transplant. They knew it was starting but couldn't find it at first, then kept an eye on it. If it started to grow too fast before they found him a liver, they could have treated it.

It does seem odd to us that we get a call from the doctor about this and not the nurse. He never calls... Well we will see what is the issue feb 10th.. I do know that on his right side its very tender, swollen quite a bit and and gives him much discomfort. I dont like the guessing games but I will be really upset if they have let something go that should have been handled 3 weeks ago. It seems like so much of the time that they get tired of hearing from you. We dont know what is a Big issue and what is simply to be expected. Its ok though because I will continue to do what I need to do in order to become informed and loaded with information so that I will understand. Or is that even possible..?
