NASH with Blood Clot in Portal Vein

Hello:

My Wife has a blood clot in her portal vein and the doctor is prescribing a low dose of coumadin to treat it. She will be monitored by a coumadin clinic, the doctor said in the past the condition was not treated but it has been the recommended treat for the past couple of years. Her platelet count rune somewhere in the 50-60 range. Has anyone else been treated this way out there?

I must not have been paying attention She is now going to be seen at the University of Washington Medical Center initially by a Dr. Iris Liou, still waiting for the appointment. I am not certain how long her portal vein has been blocked but her Ultra Sound that found it was done in December and she had an MRI 6 months earlier and nothing was mentioned about it.

Bye the way I hardly ever hear anyone talk about NASH Disease, even-though it seems to be a common cause of cirrhosis. I suppose the treatment is the same as most other cases.

She is mostly tired all the time and falls asleep during the day and can't seem to sleep at night for some reason. The palms of her hands are red most of the time, but she is taking it a lot better than I am for sure.

How is Mike doing since his transplant and how long was he on the list and where was it done?

Gipper, the symptoms you mention are quite typical for liver disease...so many here as patients or caregivers have talked of the fatigue. Mike is 2.5 years post TP and still has fatigue...but he still has the Hep C virus and is getting sick again!

We are still waiting to see the doctor that is on the transplant team. She will be seeing a Hematologist on Tuesday and I will make sure to get a direct answer from him concerning the Coumadin treatment plan. I had to take her to the emergency room this morning because she suffered from a severe headache and a fever of 101.4 all night. They drawed a lot of blood did an ultra sound and chest X-ray. the ultra sound showed no Ascites and her blood-work as far as Bilirubin was a little higher than it had been the numbers are as follows:

Ammonia - 43
Gamma Gluty TR = 121 H
T Protein = 6.3 L
Albumin = 3.4 L
Aspartate Amino = 43 H
ALK Phos = 128 H
Total Bili = 4.9 H was 3 last time
DBILI = 1 H
Indirect BILI = 3.9 H
Urine = Normal
Creat = 0.57 Nornal
Calcium = 8.3 L

@ Susie...after you were transplanted, did the clot from your portal vein disappear? My mom also had a clot in her portal vein prior to transplant.

Thank you Susie. I need to ask my mom's Coordinator, if her portal vein clot has resolved since she has been transplanted. I will also ask what their thoughts are regarding a baby aspirin for my mom. However, I doubt that in my mom's case they would recommend the aspirin because her platelets continue to be in the low range. How are your platelets?

My question after you had your spleen removed did you platelets go up before your liver transplant? I wonder why they don't remove the spleen when the platelets get down in the 30-40 range. I had my spleen removed due to an accident in 1974 and live normally.
