Odd question, but I need help for a four legged loved one.

I know this is not the right place for this but since I have AIH and have been a lurker for a very long time and sometimes post I know this is the best group to ask for advice since I am a little bit lost.

Dear admin please remove this if I am way out of line

So my darling dog was just diagnosed with liver shunt and put on special diet for liver problems.
I was told to put her on lactulose to manage her bowl movements.(?)
Well I did not manage to get to the pharmacy before the weekend so I just started the diet on Friday and she had diarrhea, she never had diarrhea in her life just firm stools.

So my question is this would the lactulose not make her stools more loose?

I know I have AIH but I never had to deal directly with that just make sure I do not do any harm to my liver but so far I have been lucky. Thats why I am not sure about all of this.

From all I know, yes it would make her stools loose....unless four-legged anatomy & physiology in the liver/ammonia department is much different that we homo sapiens.

What type of diet did he put her on? If low sodium, that fits with we humans.

Oh.. this is a precious post... I sure hope it doesn't go away.. I would think it would work the same for the puppy.

Dogs and dietary changes don't mix well. My family raised hunting dogs and Pekinese, I currently have two Pitbulls and if you change up foods on them they tend to get loose stools. I suspect after a week or so your dog will be back to the normal pooping.

I'm curious to know how lactulose affect members of the swine family. After all, pigs are people too :)

Well, we don't usaually see posts like this...but foks are chiming in so we'll leave it up. I see you post elsewhere in HW and hope you are stable now.

Hope the pooch is feeling better. How special...twins...are they little? How did your AIH work through and after your pregnancy?

So sorry to hear about your pooch. Critters are such loving family members. Please update when you have more news.

ask your vet if you can wean your dog off the old food. mix the 2 together. slowly add more of the new diet.

You are so right and I don't know how I did not manage to see this one coming after 17 years of owning dogs :P
Her stools are back to normal now but I guess I will have to follow them closely and use lactulose.

Is lactulose something you can use when needed or is it something you use always?

Thank you all for your replies, this was the most qualified group of people I could think of on liver problems weather its dog, pig or human ;)

My girls are 21 months old now and doing great. My pregnancy was a dream! I was so healthy and it was like I was not even pregnant with two babies I felt so great. All my diseases laid dormant. I had a rough time after the c-section because they did not listen to my pain medication needs and filled me up with stuff that is not liver friendly but we managed to fix that on day 3.. I don't know how often I told them it needed to be taken care of

But so far so good and they are healthy and happy 21 month olds :)
