Don't obsess too much about the bp, my ex had a reading of 57/35 two weeks ago, and THAT was scary (they took it twice to make sure).

I'm so sorry you're going through this with your Dad, but glad you finally got him the care he cannot get in-home. Don't be surprised if the next dose of lactulose is given through a naso-gastric tube or rectally. Unfortunately, they often need to use wrist restraints until the patient is lucid. Once they have gotten enough lactulose in him, along with the fluids, he may be much more alert though.

Hoping for the best...will be watching for updates.

Thanks everyone, I'm more concerned of his breathing it was quite laboured yesterday and wheezing and choking. The doctor was going to check his chest, which is good maybe they can make him more comfortable. This is the first time he has ever agreed to go to the hospital and he was semi conscious, I was in shock he agreed to go, but happy that he is getting the care he needs. The doctor did say at this point he is too ill for a transplant, but maybe they can get his strength back. He hasn't eaten much in a few weeks. He also had a very sore throat , so sore he could hardly swallow. I'm so happy that he went in, we can't take care of him the way the doctors do, we will get his lab tests back today at 2 o'clock as long as they can draw blood from him. But, really it's his breathing that bothers me the most. Thank you for all your kind words.

I'm at home with my son today, my mom and sister are at the hospital I'm just waiting for them to call me to see how my dad is doing. I hope he is better than last night and they can stabilize him. I feel like I'm in a dream.

We got my dad's blood tests back, he is in renal failure :(

Kidneys are pretty durable. I'm gonna keep thinking positive and hope he makes a come back.

Hi rkayne and Shannon, thank you for giving me and my father hope :) Did you have dialysis for your kidneys??? We are working with his doctors to get the best care, up to this point he refused to be in the hospital, at this point, he needs to be there, he is too ill for my mom to work and care for him right now. We spoke with the doctors about home care as well, when my mom is at work, someone to be there with him, because 2 days ago was scary, when my mom got home from work, he was standing downstairs ( their basement is freezing cold) not knowing what he was doing, he was pushing all the coffee tables around and we think he may fell down the stairs on his bum because he has a bruise, thank god that's all that happened. We are looking into someone being with him when he comes home, when my mom is at work. My mom has to work to pay the bills and mortgage etc. when my mom got home from work she was so scared SHE COULDNT FIND HIM ANYWHERE, HE NEVER GOES DOWNSTAIRS! She was calling for him and she heard a faint, I'm here coming from the basement, she found him absolutely freezing cold and not sure how he got down there, we need support at this point, to ensure he doesn't hurt himself. That day he went in by ambulance with NO fight at all, he said he knows he has to go in. This is the first time he has agreed, I am relieved at that. The past few weeks he has gone down so fast, not eating, hardly drinking, hiccups, nosebleeds, very very very sore throat, yellow stool, vomiting, naseous, weak, he couldn't get to the bathroom without leaning on my mom. So I am relieved he went in. His color is very dark, then pale, which is very different than his yellow hue. I just want my dad to get better, I love him dearly. I don't want to see him in pain or suffer, he never complains ever and has never had any pain medication. He really is a trooper.

Dear Scared and Sad,
Your posts brought up some things I realized when my husband of 37 beautiful years was dying from Liver cancer. He was at the beginning of HE, had some fuzzy times off and on but the major HE had not appeared yet.
I was at work, and he called me on my cell and said he could not remember my cell number. His voice sounded anxious. He also told me during that same phone call that he didn't know what medications he was on and he needed to write them down. The day before, he and I had gone over all his meds, and I wrote everything out in a clear and precise way, and taped it to the kitchen cabinet front. This is example is hardly mentionable compared to what was ahead, and what you are going through now, but it was enough for me to realize I should quit work. Which I did. The HE escalated quickly, as did all the rest, parencenteses, bleeds, and on and on....
When he was in a coma, I talked to him a lot, but always made a point of holding his hand, or his arm whenever I was near him. Once he opened his eyes, and i asked him if he was dreaming. He took a long time to answer, but finally said "sort of".
Maybe if you can sit with your dad and hold his hand, or not hold his hand, it could be you would find you are less fearful than you think. I like to believe he will know you are there if you are sitting with him or not.

Thanks everyone, has anyone been through this, he is in a semi coma, mostly sleeping since Wednesday, he does rouse for a bit but falls back to sleep, has a few mouthfuls of food and drink, but was choking on his water. He is not in any pain, that is my main concern right now. When he is sleeping he looks very peaceful. They have taken his IV out and took him off all his pills due to his kidneys not doing well. I am happy that we finally are getting him transferred to see the liver doctor, I wish he agreed to this before, but he didn't, and we were not going against his wishes, last Friday he told me he does want a transplant, that is why I pushed and pushed for him to be moved, I am thinking if this is the right thing to do, as I do not want them poking and prodding at this point if he is too far to get a transplant, I hope they just evaluate him and make a decision, if it's yes they will keep him at the big hospital for testing, if it's no, we are preparing to get palliative care in. atleast Now I know I've done what I can for my dad and I'm hoping and praying. Has anyone been in this situation?

My dad isn't going to make it. I was at the hospital last night, I held his hand told him it's jodi and that I love him. It was very difficult seeing him that way. The doctor didn't think he would make it through the night, my sister and mom are there right now with him. They gave him a bit of morphine yesterday because of his breathing I believe to make him more comfortable. He is in kidney failure and we do not want him to suffer anymore. I spoke with the doctor for about half an hour about my dad, his doctor is very caring and taking good care of him and then I said my good bye. I left my sons birthday party to go say what I needed to say....others in my family watched all the kids for me. My mom is not holding up to well, she didn't sleep much, but my sister is with her because my mom said right now she can't drive, so my sister is driving her. I am so very sad.

Dad said he wants to go, I just talked to my mom and he said he is comfortable he woke up for about an hour, in and out of consciousness, I'm glad there is no pain. It's been a long road.
