Treatment with Sovaldi sofosbuvir in Canada, Egypt or India?

Hello Everybody,

Recently, i was diagnosed Hep C 1b, and where i live (Central Asia) there is no opportunity to take Sovaldi medicine. It is only possible to purchase Interferon and ribavirin which is not option for me now.

I have opportunity to move to Canada with 2 year VISA and live in my brother house and get treatment there. So, i am wondering, do you know whether insurance covers all expenses related to Hep C treatment with Sovaldi sofosbuvir medicine in Canada for foreigners who has no status. How much it cost there?

Also, do you think it worth to consider to get treatment in Egypt or India where they have a deal with Sovaldi? i couldn't find any proper source of information on internet in these countries. Is there anyone from these countries who can share with their experience?

Hello, Fire06...welcome to the Healing Well/Hepatitis forum...

We have many people on treatment now for various genotypes, many of them Canadians and Americans.

I am American, so cannot speak for your situation, but here is what I do know.

Canadian distribution of the new drugs is regulated by each province, and we have seen some differences in insurance coverage and regimens approved...some are still using Interferon with the new drugs, some are not. One Canadian member's doctor told him to throw away the injections and just to take the pills, that his local government would catch up...so who knows what is right.

I have no idea what the coverage is for those holding Visas either for local insurance OR for the manufacturer's programs. Giliad has programs to help people who are not properly covered with a different deal for the US and Canada...but the fact that you are on a 2 year visa?...not sure. Can your brother call Gilead and inquire? I think he posted here a while back....or a person with a similar story posted here,,,,does anyone remember the poster?

I cannot judge your alternatives for other countries...but both India and Egypt have special deals with Giliad....not sure what they are doing about medical tourism and treatment options. Remember that the drugs are expensive and the governments are underwriting much of the cost....different views are likely in various places.

Since this is such an important issue, will you please post back with us as you gather information...there are so many who check out this site and don't post...we call them lurkers...and they are likely to have many of the same questions you are asking.

The Ontario government will not fully cover the cost for Aliens or it`s citizens You need a combination of private insurance and some other programs to cover some of the cost. With you having Hep C before applying for private insurance, coverage wont happen.Getting free health care in Canada isn`t as easy as some non- Canadians think.Sorry.

Pls note treatment in INDIA and Egypt is not yet available

it will be available only in 2015 Dec in India


about Sovaldi it cost about can dollars 55000 for 3 bottles

if it is O K for you then you just have to bring back to your country

you check with your doctor , he will be able to guide you

It`s a bit more. My insurer paid approx. $ 64,000.00 CDN for 84 pills. That didnt include the Rib.

My uncle has recently been diagnosed with Hep C and he's 75. He's been a physician for the past 50 years in small town Illinois. It was transmitted via an accidental needle prick. We're getting his medicine from India.

I've been getting diabetes and many other types of medicine from India for almost 20 years through Indian Post and US Post Office. Never had any issues. I would strongly recommend that you look online for a pharmacy with integrity. 99% are shady.
