Pre-transplant/transplant MELD score

Here we go again.

Themister is being used as back-up position again tonight. His MELD is not high enough to be 1st in line yet, but he is willing to do the back up and hope to get lucky. We will be at Mayo again tonight until we know which way this will go. We are both exhausted, and sure hope his turn is soon. I am mentally not engaged in anything but rest, run, and worry. Not sleeping enough....Worry does no good,...right David?? : ) Thanks to each of you for the support words. It means the world to me. Big Hugs

The liver was cirrhotic. A young man, in his 30's. So sad. First position on the list was very, very ill. Some on the list are too sick on the night they get "the call". Some are in the hospital waiting for the call.

Back-up night 1....Patient too sick for transplant. Themister prepped for surgery. Liver rejected by surgeon.

Back-up night 2...Patient good! Liver good! Patient is doing great as of last night.

Back-up night 3...Patient sick, but likely a go. Liver was very cirrhotic, and rejected.

At least themister is there, ready and knows once out of three times, he would have been transplanted if the liver would have been ok. We will continue. There is some calm about the process, having gone through this. In an exhausting way, this is a good learning experience.

Question: If you (or your loved one) were transplanted, what time of day did this happen? We have calls late afternoon to early evening this week. No days, no middle of the nights. What was your experience with timing?

My call came about 7 am, as I was traveling to Boston (MGH). I arrived at MGH about 10:40, then spent 8 hours in bed. Transplant began around 7:30 pm and lasted 5 1/2 hours. New liver didn't begin working, so they reopened me 13 1/2 hours later to check for possible clots. There weren't any. Closed me up and the liver started working 3 hours later. I was anesthetized for a total of 32 hours.

Mike got the call at 5:20 pm when the donor family agreed. His daughter drove like a maniac the 2.15 hour drive in just over an hour. She is a paramedic who used to drive an ambulance and figirls if she got stopped they'd just escort her.

By 8 he was in bed waiting. Meanwhile they harvested and tested the donor liver. I got a call at midnight that the liver was a go. He was out under about 2 or 3 and the finished about 13 hours later. I saw him at 5:30 the next afternoon while he was still under.

Meanwhile I'd been in SC and had to get myself to Miami to join Mike, his daughter and 6 year old grand daughter. I got to hospital at 9am..and joined the vigil.

So..he was evening also.

It was early afternoon when they thought they had a match, they did the testing all afternoon/evening and we were told it was a GO about 10PM. They prepped her all night (she was seriously dying, they had over 40 units of blood on the floor and requested MORE sent in from the 3 major trauma units in our area, Seattle is AMAZING!) and she went in at 6AM. She was out in 61/2 hrs (the were surprised it went so well!) One week later we came home. Advantage...we already live here and are only about 9 blocks, or a ten minute bus ride away. There was no busing for 3 months to get her immune system balanced. Now she is free to go wherever she wants, by any mode of transport. I do wait for the day she will have more energy. I have to keep in mind she was DEAD at that point, had been for a week or more. She was strong and surprised everyone. It will take years for her to get to a relative stable space. It really depends on how sick you were at the time and her MELD was off the carts. They estimated her between 50-60 if it had been on a chart. Thus, first one in was hers. She spent the last three months total...in the hospital. Still a bit traumatized from it. Bet she will be for life. Now we be patient and wait till she needs a kidney, they figure it will be between 5-10 yrs. Waiting as long as we can due to the side effects of the Prograff.

Three days of quiet. Weather is nice. Car has a full tank, we are showered, shaved, brushed, and the house is clean. I dare them to call when we are prepared :) Watching old movies, having a lot of conversations and closeness with one another. Thanks for the support and concern. Big Hugs

Board Members...please keep themister and themiz in your prayers today for a successful transplant and speedy recovery. This has been a long hard bumpy ride for both of them.

She'll be with him the next days, so EVERYONE, please pitch in and welcome folks, encourage each other....and PRAY really really hard. For them, for us all.....
