HC,
Lots of ways to get Hep C....transfusion, IV drug use with shared needles, any shared personal item that allows blood to blood transfer (razors, toothbrushes, cocaine straws), tattoo equipment before they started changing pots of paint and tips at the regulated parlors (still happens in prisons with home made tats), battlefield (think Viet Nam, battled field extractions...who has time for mask and gloves???), health care workers with their risk of sticks, poorly cleaned dental equipment (it has been in the news), etc.
It has been estimated that at least 3 million Americans are infected, many Baby Boomers, and as many as 10 million may be carrying the virus and don't know it. Since there was no treatment or vaccine what good would have mandatory testing been. But there are drugs now, though no vaccine... But many are not able to get the drugs (crappy insurance/not enough $$$). However, over time, they WILL be able to treat the affected...and maybe we can wipe this out. What makes me crazy is that there is no really strong public service push...like there was for aids. Clean needle programs have made a big difference in the HIV fight, and should be helpful for the Hep C (HCV) folks too.
BTW, sexual transmission is possible if both partners have open wounds...
Best to you,
Mama Lama
