JJ956, Sorry we had to be introduced this way. I hope your pain has eased since your husbands passing. It's never easy to watch someone you love fading away. I suspect it has a lasting effect, a piece of us gone, I'd think. A couple I'm close to just had experienced this same tragedy, My friend, His wife. Sonja my friends high school sweetheart passed away from cervical cancer at the young age of 65.

Billy (Husband) is doing good as best as I can tell. I visit him regularly. Lord, He misses Sonja something terrible. It's been months now since her passing and we still sit around chuckling about things she did. I guess she's only gone if we forget her. I don't believe there's any chance of that happening.

Anyhow, I hope this page in your life finds you looking back fondly on the last chapter. Thank you for the acknowledgement and kind words.

This whole forum, and especially your story, Ziff...kept me sane while my wife was going through this whole mess. Thank you.

rkayne, It's my pleasure to have ran into you here. Odd I often find myself having trouble remembering stuff I did or do daily but remember most everyone here, Including those from the early days here. The ones who died or just no longer post. Each of you do mean something to me, something I walk away with, it's not one sided. Guess that has gotten me into more trouble here than I care to think. Connie and Pink Grandma used to pull my arse outta the fire every other day. I'd log in and they'd cringe. Now it's ML and Mitz, Still haven't broke them in yet. Don't be a strange, David is getting a little long in the tooth. I can't hold down this hen house by myself ya know. Thanks again

What this forum gave me through that insane all too fast ride (I mean, total health to deaths door in days, matter of months then transplant or death....) I will always be stopping in here. Things are all too fresh right now so I am still working 2 jobs and trying to catch us up. Good news is I got on a state union spot. Bad news is she fell in the death net the repubs created so had her medicaid cut in Jan. Have our congress man working on it. I'll put up the entire story once we get some sort of resolution. Maybe it will help someone here. 6 million lost out on the first of Jan. Hope you are good! Always have you in my thoughts. Now we just gotta wait to hear from Themiz!

I don't post often but just wanted to thank you for posting your story Ziff. I only wish I could get my fella to sit down and read it. He's pushing 50 and has been an alcoholic since his early 20's. This spring will be 10 years we've been together and I've watched him go downhill in that time. Unfortunately he, like most other alcoholics, denies he has a problem and believes he is perfectly healthy. Always refers back to some routine blood tests he had 4 or 5 years ago that showed his liver was fine. I know he will not get it until he can see the proof for himself :( I watch him come home from work everyday and sleep for the entire evening, I see the blood he coughs up in the bathroom, the changes in his skin, the smell that comes off him sometimes and the moodiness. It saddens me immensely and also makes me very angry since I'm living with liver disease through no fault of my own (diagnosed with AIH 18 months ago after acute liver failure). He has eased up a bit since my health has deteriorated but I fear it's too little, too late. I almost pray for something major to happen to scare him into sobriety....but then again, I love him too much to wish any harm to him. It's a hard place to be in.

Sorry Farmchick. You may unfortunately be correct about to little too late. I'd suspect he knows somethings wrong and the fear of actual diagnosis would make him face that fear. Honestly I don't which is worse. Running from something always waiting for the hammer to drop or standing tall and facing things directly. One thing I am certain of is that nothing will get better from running. Learning to deal with what ever comes is often painful but we know for a fact it makes us stronger in the end. Of course I don't have to tell you that. You seem to be coping well. May not be pleasant but your doing it, Shame he can't follow your lead.

My mom used to call and say "Rick, I just wish that God would make that liquor bitter to your lips". A churchy little woman fed up with a carefree drunk. She added on more than one occasion "I pray that mess makes you sick as a dog". Well........... I ain't into all that churchy mess but something happened alright. darn near killed me. Moral to the story. Be careful what you wish.

@rkayne...so sorry to hear that Medicaid cut hit your wife. This stinks! No sick person should need to choose between food and meds, or be denied dignified health care because they are too sick or poor. You have been a great advocate for your wife. Hugs

@mitzi...Agreeing with David on Ziffle's quote. " Be careful what you wish for". Themister and I had horses before we moved to AZ for this transplant thing...and know all about breaking them. But Ziff ?? He is a whole other animal nono Big Hugs

Still check in occasionally Miz. I had to postpone last months trip to UNC due to sleet and icey roads. I feel fine other than a little groggy at times. No real complaints. Another spring has sprung and household chores abound. A bit of time to reflect.
I finally quit smoking. I'd slack off and go right back to lighting up again. Been about 6 weeks since last puff. Sure Doc will love that. Wife almost begged me to start back after the first week. Said I was a real jackass. Funny, I didn't notice it a bit. Me being a jackass that is. Just another excuse to load me up with lactulose I suspect. Hard to be argumentative when your sitting on the toilet.
Ain't life grand? If this is the worst I have to complain about, I think I'll be alright for a little while. Hope you and the Mizter are pluggin along well. My best to you all.

Good for you, Ziff. Connie told me that quitting tobacco was tougher than stopping heroin, and I've heard that from another ex addict. I smoked for 10 years and it was the toughest thing to give up. I know if I took a puff, I'd be right back at it.

I'm really happy that you quit.

Ziff... Yep, plugging along. Themister is ready for this to be over, but he continues to wait. We both need, and really want to go on a vacation. A long one. Last was 2010....and for us, that is a loooooong time ago. Xifaxan takes the vacation money. And, we know we can not get that far away. I want tropical with non-alcoholic, umbrella drinks. But that won't be happening.

I didn't know you smokED. This craving never lets you go. Get busy doing...not thinking. Just. do. not. take. one. single. puff. That is my only advice, having been where you are :) You are doing a good thing.

Sorry your wife has had you doing the lactulose shuffle. We hate this as much as you do. Perhaps...more! Big Hugs

Earth to Ziff... this guy needs to hear from you. He sounds like a lightweight, compared to you.

Not putting you down Cash, but from what you're telling us about your medical results, it sounds as if staying dry will likely save you from further liver problems.

By the way, why did your wife put up with with drinking so much? I wasn't much of a drinker, but 40 years of Hep C did the trick.

Thank you for sharing your story and glad I came across it. It's wonderful and glad life is better.

I am a returning member since 2006. My husband went through something very similar as you did 10 years ago, he was a construction worker/laborer. Boy, it was definitely not something I signed up for as a wife but guess what, he's alive, we're still together 18 years going strong and many of the things that you mention are so very true and have gone through those very same experiences ourselves. We have had many ups and downs, financial crises and still do, many happy times, many said times, many questionable times but we manage to live our lives the happiest we can do we can with what we have. My husband is 10 years sober, he has been on a liver transplant list since 2007 and still see's his docs, has medical procedures done and so forth. After all that we have been through, I wouldn't change any of it. It has taught us what life is all about and most importantly how important it is to have your family, trust in God and all that matters is love you have and the will make yourself a better person and learn and share stories to keep focused on what matters.
