Dietary restrictions will very between different types of Hepatic disorders. You may have to control salt, protein and fluids. Sugar, fat or calories May also be needed to be controlled.
Sodium- Limit sodium or salt intake. Sodium restriction prevents the build up of excess fluid retention. The recommended intake should be 2000mg or (1) teaspoon of salt a day and less is always better. Avoid using salt shaker. Get rid of salt shaker. Do not salt food during cooking process or at the table. Shop for unprocessed foods as they contain salt. Read food labels when shopping. Choose low sodium products, But don't assume they are low (read and compare labels). Lo sodium is considered to be 140mg or less per serving. Go easy on condiments and sauces. Restaurants use alot of salt be careful with menu choice. Choose basic foods like a baked potato instead of fries or a loaded potato.
Salty snack foods are a no-no. Ask your doctor if you can use particular salt substitutes, Some products can interact with medications. Some examples of allowed food: Breads, English muffins or Bagels, unsalted crackers, Rice, potatoes, oatmeal, grits, cream of wheat, cereal. Fruits, all types fresh frozen or canned but no dried stuff. Veggies of all types fresh, frozen and low sodium canned. Meats and poultry, Fresh, frozen without salt curing. Low sodium canned tuna, eggs, shellfish cooked with no added salt. Dairy products, Milk, yogurt, low sodium cheese (Swiss), Cream cheese, ricotta. Condiments should be low sodium Ketchup, mayo, mustard and vinegar. Misc. foods like Jam, jelly, jello, plain
cookies, cakes and ice cream, sherbet, unsalted butter.
