hi mhump,
you had a ultrasound a couple months ago, according to your original post. you stated it was negative.. that would rule out cirrhosis, and gall bladder, bile ducts. but your alt/ast are moderately elevated. and you stated light stools.
do you have all of your metabolic panel. that will give you kidnet, liver, and fluids and electrolytes..
there are no drs here, but many folks here are quite knowledgeable.
an ultrasound can not confirm cirrhosis, but can rule it out. it gives size, shape, and surface texture. it also gives condition of the biliary tree. if your scan was a full abdominal scan, it will also give external condition of your kidneys, pancreas, and spleen
wish you all the luck possible in your quest for answers.

I believe back in Nov after a cruise I did some back to back drinking (binge), and contacted Alcoholic Hepatitis and was very very sick where I couldnt even work for two months. For the past six months I've been getting better but with the history of my drinking I think it has turn into cirrhosis. Before the cruise in Sept I notice fatigue and headaches and wrote it off as being over work. But in the course of the six months after the cruise I start developing red palms, green spider veins on my chest and stomach, pale skin, lots of constipation, and low urine output. about
a month or less ago I start having this pain on my right upper side near my rib cage. I also notice it's aggravated by greasy foods and sometimes just sharp pain there. Along with that my spleen feels swollen too, so I believe things have gotten better with the alcoholic hepatitis but now cirrhosis is settling in.
I did a second ultrasound and they said my liver was extended but that is it. Back in Feb I did a liver and spleen scan and that was normal. But all the while my alt/ast is elevated like 162/70 several times. And yes stool a pale color but not all the time. My appointment for a biopsy is tomorrow so I will definitely find out what is going on. I am a little scared never had anything done like this but I have to do it for a peace of mind. Thanks ppm guy, Ziff, and Mama for all the support.

Mhump - I did not get a chance to read all the responses. But I was diagnosed with Alcoholic Hep-C back in 1977 (I was age 20-21 female). I did not stop drinking until age 25 year 1981 November. I am so grateful that I did not continue drinking (just found out about
2 years ago that one can get "cured" from Hep - C with meds. Which I did.
I wanted to mention that when I quit drinking at age 25 I did it thru the help of AA (without that program I would not be alive today and I am sure my Hep-C would have progressed further). My suggestion is to try AA solidly for 90 days (meaning go to a meeting as often as you can, follow the suggestions that are given). You do not have to do the "non drinking" thing or if you are going to the "recovery" - you don't have to do it by yourself. You mentioned you are a vet (contact hospital for help) or - you can contact AA thru the yellow pages and see if they can connect you with another member to take you to meetings in your area and get you connected. We do have sober cruises, sober vacations, sober everything. I truly am wishing you all the best in this. Believe me - I did not want to become an alcoholic but I am one - but today I am a recovering one with almost 35 years of sobriety. Respectfully

Thanks so much RoseAnne for the stern advice! and yes I will join a group. I was hoping I would be able to get this biopsy done today but it's been postponed for Tuesday of next week. I need a driver to drive me home after the procedure. I really was nervous but was willing to go through this today but they said I had to get a driver.
And yes I am alone but when I join this AA group meeting it will be alright, I feel deep down inside!!! Thanks again!!!!

RoseAnne has that info right. mhump we're right here. You'll get through next Tuesday. AA is an excellent idea. I have quite a few years in at Alanon and have high regard for both organizations. Now just chill for a few days and it'll be over. Deep breaths mhump deep breaths.

So let me ask you guys this.....
What does a biospy really reveal? I know cirrhosis but can a MRI and CT scan do the same??? Having mixed emotions!!!!

mhump,
A liver biopsy is procedure that removes a small portion of your liver. it is analyzed for grade of inflamation, as well as stage of liver damage(or vice versa). it gives your grade of inflamation in a number value(1 to 4). it also gives you your stage of fibrosis, also 1 to 4(metavir). 4 being cirrhosis.
mri and ct scans and ultrasounds, all give you surface measurements, surface textures, bile duct dilations, and detection of masses, calcifications etc...
the fibroscan does evaluate internal liver fibrosis. it takes 12 scans of different areas of the liver, with a score for each area, and an overall score measured in kpa. 12 kpa being cirrhosis.

So what you are saying ppm guy is that the fibroscan is very accurate? dependable? So CT and/or a MRI what about
an elastography, which is a glorified ultra-sound, to see the level of fibrosis you have. As for the HE, have you heard of a venogram (done via a transjugular biopsy) to determine if you have portal hypertension, which is generally the proximate cause of the toxins?
Let me know if you heard of these terms?

hi,
all forms of biopsy can be off a little.
fibroscan and elastography(mre) test the stiffness of the liver, which are most accurate for those with cirrhosis. most large liver clinics use fibroscan, because it takes 5 minutes and you get the results, before you get off the table.
elastography is a mayo clinic invention that is used for liver and other body parts. its similar to fibroscan.
transjugular biopsy is an invasive procedure, that is used for evaluation of advanced cirrhosis. yes it is used to evaluate portal hypertension.

Did my biopsy today! Thank God it's over with....I do feel a little tenderness at the spot but not to bad...
I was looking a blood work I did a couple of days ago, here is the only abnormality in the blood work, and you guys tell me...
Prothromb time international ration 0.9 L (2.00-3.00)
AST/SGOT 30
ALT/SGPT 97
Mean Platelet Volume 6.1 L (7.4-10.4)
White Blood Count 10.74 H (4.00-10.50)
The AST is listed as normal just thought I would post it because it goes with ALT...When I get the result back from the biopsy I will post them too...thanks for LOVE

mhump,
your alt/ast ratio can be a consideration in the cause and severity of liver disease.
check this out for a basic explaination:

mhump,
your pt/inr numbers show how long it takes, for your blood to clot.. your numbers suggest that you clot fast. thats good

Diagnosis
-Consistent with Mild streatohepatitis
-Mild periportal fibrosis is identified
-No dysplasia or malignancy is identified
Comment: the demonstrates mild steatosis, mild lobular inflammation, and no evidence of ballooning degeneration. Trichrome and reticulin stains (control positive) demonstrate mild periportal fibrosis. An iron stain (control positive) falls to reveal an increase in iron stores.

mhump,
the steatosis will improve with your sobriety and diet..
the iron increase(if im reading your sentence correct) will be dealt with by your dr.

How are you doing ppm guy? how is Ziffle and Mamalama doing? I would first like to thank you three for giving me good advice! there was others who commented but you guys really stand out in my mind.
Been doing good for the most part. It took a whole year for my body to recover from alcohol hepatitis (mild case I guess) I wasnt in the hospital.
I still have red palms, itching skin (at night mainly). I have been eating right and exercising daily.
just to catch you up a little more...fribroscan didn't show cirrhosis but I did a liver biopsy and it showed mild fribrosis.
my question is what to do about
itchy skin? and fribroscan is close to being an year old, should I repeat it?
God is Good and thanks in advance!!!!! much love

hi mhump,
im doing well at the time.. I had 2 surgeries earlier this year.. ive recovered nicely.. mamalama has taken some time, to take care of herself.
your continued sobriety is absolutely fantastic. I know how difficult quiting is..your eating right an d exercising, is also key to your recovery..
I had red palms for years with liver disease. it disappeared within a year, after curing my liver disease..
liver disease can lead to lack of proper fluid circulation..this can cause dry , itchy skin.. what does your dr say??
if your dr wont approve a fibroscan, ask your doc about
a ultrasound. both would be great!! an ultrasound will show the condition of your liver surface. any fibrosis on the sur face will probably be observed. it is also used to check for cancers.
